This was posted by glynor in the 205 bug thread.

Is it just me or is the irritating "Saving Database..." pause back with a vengance with this last build?

I can barely get a single file tagged without having to wait an eternity for the "Saving Database" process to finish with the UI to MC completely frozen meanwhile.
I agree.  Wasn't this issue supposed to have been addressed in MC11?  If you have a large library it's a real problem.

Is your library on a network drive?  If so, try moving it to a local drive and see if that makes a difference.

Yes it's on a network drive.  However, I thought this had been put into a separate thread so you could continue tagging etc.  I share my library between 2 pc's (not at the same time) so I really need it on a network drive.

I suppose I could write a batch program that will move the library to the local drive of the machine that needs it and then fire up MC.  This would be a bit messy though and make for a slow start up of mc.

Is there anything more that can be done to improve performance here?  When it does try and save the db MC pretty much locks up so if you are burning a CD you could be in trouble.

It is a pain when the database saves

I was more thinking it could be done in the background this way it would not freeze up MC11 for a min or so like mine does (this is on a 3.xx Gighz computer, using a standard IDE drive off the motherboard).

if it was done in the background like the tags are saved this would fix the whole problem.

Hi Matt,
I have noticed this as well (my library is on a local drive) but I would not say it is anything like it was before MC11
It does however seem more frequent in recent weeks.
Anything that would have increased the size of your database?

is that question posed with anything particular in your mind?
I believe she had a problem like that once before.

This is exactly what I have done, and I am pleased with the solution currently.  Ideally, the Library Server function will be upgraded and expanded to make MC's library a true multi-user, multi-machine database.  I certainly wouldn't hold my breath for this to happen anytime soon though, as I imagine it would require a major overhaul of the system.  (Possibly target this goal for v12 guys?)

Either way, I described my script system in a fair amount of detail over in this thread: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26442.msg184015#msg184015

If anyone is curious to see more, just post back...

I don't know about others, but I would pay more for this option, if that would be necessary.  Not huge amounts more, but I feel it is an important enough feature that if there were a Library Server Pro or something like that ... It would be okay with me.

Of course, I would take it free too!!   ;D

I don't think that would work too well for me because I do update tags from my HTPC (ratings) as well as my dev PC so unless I copy the library back to the central share immediately after closing MC I'm sure to get them out of sync.

How large are these files in your database:

view state (data).jmd
view state (index).jmd

Maybe try erasing them (you'll lose saved columns and sorting) and see if it fixes the problem.

Thanks.

Mine are 39KB & 94KB resp.  I'll try your suggestion and let you know.
