Referenced Memory error
« on: July 09, 2005, 02:42:20 am »

Okay I seem to get this error quite frequently and am not sure how to fix it.

I use the Library Browser window often, and when I sometimes click to play an album, media center gets stuck trying to switch the "playing now" to the album list. It starts playing the album a bit and crashes while trying to switch the screen to "playing now". Windows then give me an error like the following:

The instruction at "0x.......(hex addr)" referenced memory at "0x.....(hex addr)". The memory could not be "read".

Any clues what the cause may be?

Actually... I found the rogue process.. memory is now as follows:

Media Center Registered 11.0.305 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\

Microsoft Windows XP 5.1 Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Intel Pentium 4 2997 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 1047 MB, Free - 387 MB

That still seems like a lot if you not running any other progs.

This is mine:

Microsoft Windows 2000 5.0 Service Pack 4 (Build 2195)
AMD Athlon 1634 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 293 MB

I have more than 2/3 available, while you only have 1/3, but I'm no expert.

Those two things (memory access errors and heavy unexplained RAM usage) happening make me strongly suspect Spyware.  If you haven't done so very recently, download updated versions of AdAware and Spybot S&D and run them.  Remove anything they find.  Reboot.  Repeat the scans.

One other possibility is that you are using some crazy, badly-designed program on your computer that runs on startup.  Not exactly spyware, but not friendly either... You mentioned a rogue process.  Was it from something you use?

Last but not least check for hardware problems.  Always good to eliminate that possibility.  You can download and run Memtest86, boot to it from floppy, and make sure its not something physical.

If you disable "Jump to Playing Now" on play, do you still see crashes?

Not currently, I am testing some more. The problem is that the crashes are at random so its hard to say for sure. But it seems that it doesn't crash when disabling that option. It really shouldn't crash then cash the crash happens when switching to the Playing Now screen.
