Zone Synch Question
« on: July 30, 2005, 01:48:47 pm »

Can someone clarify this.

My setup is MC11 with two zones, room1 and room2. I use NetRemote on PocktePC and MediaBridge 2.0 to remotely control MC from Room1. I use MC itself on a PC in room 2.

I started some tracks playing in room1 via the PocketPC.

In room2, I selected Player --> Playback Options --> Synchronize Current Zone --> From room1.

This works! Music playing in room 1 now plays in room 2.

However, any transport changes I make via PDA in room1 ARE NOT reflected in room2. For example, if I stop music in room1, room2 keeps on playing.

Is it true that zone syncronisation is a once off deal and any future modifications to either zone break the synch link? Is there any way to slave all zones to one so that all controls in the 'master' zone affect all zones?

Thanks

Peter,
This is a work in progress and it sounds like you're doing pretty well so far.

We expect to improve the experience in the future.

For now I would suggest using a master zone with it's own sound card (you can get USB cards if the PCI slots are filled) and the output connected to the line in or AUX input of each of the regular zone sound cards with mini jack splitters (you'll get those at any Best Buy or Radio Shack if you're in the US, in other places of the world they should be in any well assorted audio video store). I do that, with Girder muting and unmuting inputs. If you don't use Girder, you can do that manually, but that's not as cool, of course...

Thanks guys.

Was just curious to know if I was missing something!

It would be great if future releases could include the ability to slave one or more zones to a specified 'master'.

I'm more than happy with the MC abilities at present. This would be icing. Mastiff, your solution sounds like a possibility and I'll look into it if I ever get a spare few minutes. At present, I use a single multi-channel sound cared (Delta 410) and that works great for the few test zones I've set up.

Cheers

Synchronizing across different soundcard hardware is hit-and-miss, at best, nearly impossible in the real world.  That being the case it'd hardly seem worthwhile to get into slaving zones off each other.  That is, having a given zone 'tied' to the actions of another.

Dedicated A/V systems like Russound treat this as a "party mode" where the other keypads are unable to make track changes when tied into it.  Only one keypad becomes the master while in this mode.  Were it not for the difficulting in actually syncing zones that might be an equivalent sort of technique.

A bit of cable gerry-rigging might work but the programmable interfaces to the mixers are inconsistent.  Feeding the output from one soundcard into the input of another and then switching that line-in to the output would route the signal but controlling it would be a feat.   I'd also be somewhat concerned about impedance issues.   That and if you used any sort of external controllers (like NetRemote) you'd have an interesting time keeping it all straight.

Bill

Which is why I use a multi-channel sound card - same hardware, drivers etc. on all channels.

Works pretty good so far.
