iPod Shuffle 512Mb
« on: January 15, 2006, 01:03:22 am »

Hello, I'm having trouble getting MC11.0.316 to recognize my iPod Shuffle 512Mb. Here is a description of the problem.

1. Start MC11.0.316
2. Connect iPod (I changed the iTunes settings to make sure it does not start when I plug the iPod)
3. MC displays the New Device Recognition window - I select Yes and then Ok
4. The iPod does not appear on the left Panel
5. Remove and re-insert iPod
6. IPOD panel displayed for 5 seconds on the left side of the screen and then disappears
7. Click on Handheld Player in the Action Window
8. MC displays a window informing "No Handheld Available"

Some good information points:

a.I used the Reset detectec devices function, but the same behaviour occurs.
b.When I try to use iTunes after using MC to access the iPod, iTunes says that I should use iPod Software Updater to restore the iPod to factory settings.
c.When I connect the iPod with Windows Explorer open, but with iTunes and MC closed, the drive E: is mapped to the iPod, but just for 5 seconds, then it disappears.

Please help!

I'm experiencing the same problem:
1. I too have an iPod Shuffle 512MB;
2. It works fine with iTunes, of course;
3. After reading some suggestions in this forum, I updated to version MC 11.1.91; I also turned off the iPod option which started iTunes automatically when the iPod was inserted into the USB drive;
4. Still the same problem
5. I did notice that the iPod does not show as a "drive" when I click on "My Computer" which is no problem for iTunes but may be a problem for MC(?);
6. I even downloaded the old iPod plugin found in MC:  Now whenever I start MC, and click on "handheld" the MC app terminates immediately;
7. So now I re-installed MC11.1.91

FYI, I've got thousands of songs on MC in "ape" format, and my hope is that with a proper iPod to MC setup I'll easily be able to copy/convert "ape" files from MC to "MP3" format on the iPod.  If this is an unreasonable expectation someone pls set me straight soon.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Re: iPod Shuffle 512Mb - Progress Made

I installed MC 11.1.99 and I'm now able to transfer files to my iPod Shuffle. Here are the steps I took after installing the latest MC build.

1. Run iPod Updater 2005-11-17
2. Run Media Center with the iPod connected
3. MC displays "There is no database on your iPod. Would you like to erase everything on the iPod and start over?" Yes selected
4. MC displays "This will initialize your iPod. You will lose all data on the iPod. Continue with the format?" Yes selected
5. Format window displayed for 1 second
6. Select Handheld Player from Action Window - iPod panel displayed
7. Drag 3 mp3 to iPod
8. Press transfer - transfer window displayed for 5 seconds
9. Right click on the iPod entry under Drives & Devices and press Eject iPod

The mp3 files were properly transferred to the iPod. Nevertheless, I'm now dealing with another issue - I can transfer mp3 files from my local drive. Nevertheless, when I connect to a Library server, I get a File not Supported error. I'm going to search the forum for this issue.

Good news that you have it working.  Couple of questions:
1.  Does the iPod still work with iTunes?
2.   Does the iPod still work with MC after you physically disconnect the iPod, then re-connect?  (I got mine to work briefly with MC,  but MC did not find the iPod after disconnecting and then reconnecting)

itunes runs a program in the background that could cause a problem.  Try disabling it.  I believe it's called ituneshelper.

Jim,
That was it!!!:  I stopped iTunesHelper, and now I'm able to work with the iPod Shuffle from within MC as I had hoped.
Many thanks.

I wish Apple wouldn't do that, but I'm glad you're running OK now.
