I need help using Firefly remote.
« on: January 19, 2006, 08:25:13 pm »

I just downloaded the trial of Media Center 11 and am evaluating it for my needs. I have a HTPC running Beyond TV and Beyond Media. Beyond Media's audio interface is VERY elementary and quite badly programmed. I have 500 albums and it takes Beyond Media over 2 minutes to display all the album art...each time you open it! Sheeesh! You can't even browse by atrist-album so on and so on.

Anyway, I am very impressed with MC11, mostly with the theatre view. It is almost perfect and to be frank, this would be the view I would use 99% of the time. I want the 10 foot interface as this is in my rumpus room and I do not want to get out my mouse and keyboard.

Here is my problem...I have configured my firefly remote (RF remote from www.snapstream.com) through xml files to control MC 11. It does a great job and I am very happy. The problem is the remote only works in the standard view. When I switch to theatre view, the remote does not work. If I switch back to the standard view, it works again. When I configure my firefly, I put in an xml file as a profile. So when my remote sees that MC11 is running, it runs the corresponding profile. "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\Media Center.exe"

Does anyone know why this doesn't work in theatre mode and what I could do so that it does? Does the theatre mode use a different .exe file that I would need to build another profile for?

(The remote will also not run in mini, windowed and full screen views either)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A remote should work the same no matter what view you have.  That's a strange problem.

Well, I was trying to simplify. I will go into more detail.

When in standard view, my profile works 100%. I know because I can see that the profile has been loaded. When I switch to theatre view, the media center profile is unloaded and the default profile is loaded in it's place. Basic control is available with the default profile (navigation) but everything else does not work.

I am sure that it is because my remote doesn't think that media center is running any more. I need a way to tell my remote that theatre view should also use the same profile.

I did some more digging this evening and I think that I may have discovered the problem. When theatre view is running, a new application shows up in windows task manager called media center display. There is also media center running as well. I think this may be the problem.

I hope this explains my problem in a bit more detail.

In my profile I also tried putting :theatre view after the .exe in my profile, but did not work. example:C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\Media Center.exe:theater view". Do you think I am on the right track with this?

Also if anyone knows anything about xml files, maybe this will help. This is the command that I am using to start the profile:

<Profile Type="SnapStream.Firefly.Core.Profile" Name="" ShowOSD="False">
  <Identifier ClassName="MJFrame" WindowText="Media Center" FileName="C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\Media Center.exe" ClassNameComparer="Contains" WindowTextComparer="Contains" FileNameComparer="CaseInsensitiveContains" WindowOrder="0" />

Maybe there is a class I can enter for theater view or something?

If anyone has any ideas that I could try, please let me know.

Thanx again!

Well, I finally got my remote to work in theatre view. The problem was that I needed to change the class name, file name and window text in my xml file. Once I sorted all that out, the firefly remote now works in all modes!
