UPnP on Nokia N80
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:08:48 pm »

Hi, I am trying to get the new Nokia N80 working with MC (11.1.198) via UPnP. I realise it is not a supported device but thought it was worth a go!

Basically, the phone finds the server no problem, and then i can browse Audio/Images/Video/Playlists all the way down to individual tracks - all looking very promising.

But when i select a track, the phone pops up "Select device: Waiting for devices" and then never returns :-(

I'm not sure why it looks for a device when it already has found it?

Anyway - if you have any ideas on how to sort it (maybe my UPnP settings are wrong?) then i'd be truly grateful.....

Here is the MC output:

If you'll make a sniff with ethereal (www.ethereal.com) and send it to me (gateley @ jriver.com), I'll take a look...

Thanks,

Can you try a couple of different track types? The sniff you sent me used WMA. Try a MP3 track and a WAV track, and try on-the-fly conversion to MP3 of a WMA track.

If none of these work, we'll take a different approach.

Thanks - this looks like a cool phone, how do you like it so far?

Very odd indeed - i don't actually own any WMA files, my entire collection is MP3!

Do you think the Nokia is requesting WMA and MC is converting it?

The N80 is a gorgeous phone - not tiny but still small enough to be a phone rather than a "PDA with phone functionality". But also packed full of technology to keep a geek like me happy! There were lots of reports of poor battery life, but i've been using it pretty heavily and it seems to be more than fine. Highly recommended....

OK- my UpNP settings had "convert if necessary" and the conversion was to MP3 (VBR) - so i still don't see how WMA got into the equation?

Anyway, turned conversion off completely and tried again.

Have sent you the new sniff......

Brought down to earth with a bump  :(

I installed the Nokia Home Media Server (at John's request) to see it all working.

Well, i can browse all my media files on the N80, and drill down to an individual MP3 (as before with MC). When i select an MP3, it asks me to then select a device, and so i choose Nokia HMS (the only choice) - and it starts playing the MP3 .... ON MY PC!

So in effect this makes the N80 a glorified remote control, and not as i had hoped - a portable client for playing streamed music.

Unless i've completely misunderstood UPnP?

Nokia Home Media Server is based on SimpleCenter (http://www.simplecenter.com/)

And this is from their forum:

Re: Can you play music from your PC on your N80?

SimpleCenter supports the streaming of media to devices that support the playback of streamed media. Unfortunately, the software on the Nokia N80 has not been designed to take advantage of this feature of SimpleCenter.

I do believe it would be technically possible for the phone to be able to stream music from the PC, it just hasn't been implemented at this time.

We'll make sure to pass this along as a feature request for Nokia. Perhaps they will be able to make it available as a update for the N80...
