I tried to install the "Tempo and Pitch control" plugin, but when I hit the "download" button, I get the error message:

Invalid package file.  Cannot continue.

File C:\Documents and Settings\...\Temporary Internet Files\...\tempoandpitchcontrol[1].mjp"

If I instead right click on the file and select "Save target as," it will download as "tempoandpitchcontrol.mjp" -- i.e. no "[1]" in the filename -- which I feel may be related to the problem.  I have not installed the "downloaded" file yet since I want to troubleshoot the "auto" install issue first.

I tried deleting the temp internet files, and I made sure to select the correct OS (XP) in the dropdown.  The only thing that doesn't "quite" match up is the download is for "11.0" and I'm running "11.1."  I don't know if this is important or not, however, since the IS no "11.1" option available on the downloads page.

Does anybody have any feedback on this?  Is this perhaps an 11 vs 11.1 issue?  Based on the "[1]" in the error message path, it seems more like a problem with the installer.

I solved it.  It turned out I had a corrupt Temporary Internet Files "index.dat" file (which I discovered when I started suspecting that this issue was related to the issues I was having with Shoutcast "Tune In" links not working.)

To solve this, I logged on as a different (temporary) user, then opened a command prompt window and navigated to C:\Documents and Settings\my normal username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5.  I then deleted the index.dat file with the command "del index.dat," and rebooted.  After this, the Tempo and Pitch control plugin installed normally, and the Tune In links started working as well.

Note that the reason you need to log on as a different user is that the CURRENT user's index.dat file will be locked (i.e. there is a different index.dat file for each user.)  You therefore need to log on as a different user in order to delete the index.dat file in your "normal" username folder.

I'm not that technically minded and need some basic instructions with command prompts etc. Any chance of providing a step by step link to a non techno-phobe , or posting an idiot proof guide?

I'll do my best.

First, if you don't already have more than one accout set up on your system, you'll have to set a new one up.  You can do this via "Control Panel/User Accounts/Create a New Account."  Once you have a second account created, simply log off and log on as this other user (or just reboot and log on as the other user.)

Once you're in Windows as this "other" user, go to "Start/Run" and type "cmd" (without the quotes) in the "open" box.  Hit "Okay," and a command prompt window will open.  At the command prompt, type:

cd C:\Documents and Settings\<your NORMAL username>\Local settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5

Press Enter.

Note that you want to use your NORMAL username, NOT the "other" one that you just logged in as, since it's your NORMAL user account that has the problem.  If everything was typed correctly, the command prompt should now look like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your NORMAL username>\Local settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5>

In other words, it should show the entire path you typed as the prompt (which will probably wrap to a second line.)

At this prompt, type:

del index.dat

Hit enter.  If memory serves, I "believe" that it will indicate that it deleted the file.  Close the command prompt window, reboot, and log in as your "normal" username once again.  Start Internet Explorer and it will recreate the index.dat file, after which everything should work once again.

I still have problems though.

I have followed your instructions and logged on using a Guest account. I then ran the cmd prompt and typed in

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5> and hit enter and all i got was this message


The syntax of the command was incorrect

 I cannot get access to delete the index.dat file so what am I doing (or not doing) wrong or(right)?

Dont know if this is because i am using ie7 beta or not so tried it with ie7 instead and still no joy.


Its really bugging me now not being able to update or install these plugins, and i really DO NOT want to go back to WMP under any circumstances.

I seem to have sorted the problem after reading another thread about ie7

I uninstalled ie7 and reverted to ie6 and now can update and install plug-ins to my hearts content, and its great to have my JRIver back and fully functional again.

Sorry -- I didn't realize you were using IE7, which is a whole different issue.  Wait for IE7 to be officially out (it's still in Beta at the moment) and hopefully this sort of issue will be sorted out by then.

Regarding why you couldn't get the command line to work, I assume that IE7 does not use "Content.ie5" as the folder where it keeps the index.dat file.

Just wanted to point out that the command lalittle said to execute was "cd C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Local settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5" Note the "cd" at the beginning. That's the command to "change directory". Typing the name of the directory itself won't do anything.
