Song ratings missing
« on: August 10, 2006, 10:44:12 pm »

Installed MC 12.0.53.
Chose not to uninstall MC 11.
Added my music folder to the library.
It imported all the songs.
First thing I notice is that the rating field is empty!
I tried update library from tags.
No change.
I pulled MC 11 back up.  Ratings are showing.
I checked the library field options in MC 11 for "store in file tags" and that is checked for the rating field.

Next, I deleted a couple albums out of MC 12.
I then used windows explorer to drag/drop and import them back in.  Still no ratings appear.

Ideas?

What type of file format are you using?

I had a similar problem.  I use a custom field called Ben's Rating to store my rating (and other's for my family ratings) so I can uniquely store all our ratings in every file...  I found that if I do not check "Store in tags" BEFORE importing, they wouldn't import.  Therefore, try creating a new library in MC 12.  Then, open the options and find Rating.  Make sure the store in tags option is selected.  Then import.

Please check from the Action Window > File Properties > File Type Info in MC11.1 that the ratings really are in the physical file tags before importing the files to MC12.

If so, then it may be an MC12 bug that must be dealt.

In general, you could restore an MC11.1 library backup file in MC12 for getting all old data available easily (including view schemes, playlists, statistics, custom library fields and all field data that is not available in the file tags).

Naturally, it is important that people test the new import system too.

Hmm...  In MC 11.1.90 here's what the file type info shows.
I don't see rating in there at all.
I double checked that in the library settings that the Rating field is set to store in tag if possible.  I also highlighted this song and chose "update tags from library".

Here's what the file type info shows.

Looks like MC has not written any tags.

It should be like this:

Ok.  I restored my MC 11 library into MC 12.
Now I see the ratings.

So now I'm interested in having MC store the rating in the tags.
Tools > Options >Library > Standard Library Fields
Rating field has "store in file tags" checked with an X.

Right clicked a song.
Chose Library Tools > Update tags from library
Information window pops up and says 1 file updated (0 failures).

Here's the tags.  Still not seeing MC's comment tags    ?

As a test, try to remove all tags before updating the tags (Library Tools > Remove Tags). Use a duplicate file so that the original is preserved (Matt may want to have a sample).

Rather odd. Did you try this with MC11.1 or MC12?

Seems like MC cannot write its proprietary tags to the file. Do you have the standard Comment field set up as writable? I think that is needed for the other MC specific "COMM" fields.

Can MC change any of the standard tags (Artist, Album, etc)?

Thanks Alex B!
It turns out the Comment field did not have the store in file tags checked.
I fixed that, then did a "update tags from library".
Didn't even think to look at that one since there was a separate one for the rating field.

Configuration issue, not a bug.
Case closed.

A forum search confirmed that I found the same solution about a year ago in this thread & post:

Is this a bug? Perhaps MC should warn that it couldn't write all tags because the Comment field is not allowed to "store in file tags".
