Giving The Gift of MC
« on: July 21, 2006, 08:39:40 am »

If I wanted to buy a copy of MC as a present for a friend, but have it registered in her name/email address... How would I pull that off?

Just go through the purchase process, using her name and e-mail...

Hey... I just went to do this today and hit a big problem.  From the Purchase FAQ:
Quote
Media Center 11 can now be purchased from the Help section of the program. The price is $40.00.  To download the program...

I can't start the Buy process on my computers because they're all registered already.  Her computer is 300 miles away from me, so using her's isn't really an option...

What now?  Can someone provide a link directly to the purchase page that doesn't have to be done on the computer that has MC installed?  I want to be able to purchase it from my computer, but have her use the key on hers...

PS.  The link at the very bottom of the Purchase FAQ to the Download Page is broken.  It's in this text:

Quote
If you have trouble, make sure you are using a current version of the program, and that you are using Internet Explorer as your browser.  You can visit the download page to verify that your version is the latest.

Sends you to the 404 page.  The link is:

http://www.mediajukebox.com/download

Just a little old.   ;)

I, too only have registered installations!  That's an odd issue and I wonder why JRiver doesn't make it easier to purchase from the web site.  We'll wait 30 minutes and you should have an answer.

The correct link seems to be
http://www.jrmediacenter.com/purchase.html

... but don't ask me what to do next... (seems a little obscure to me)

Yeah... that page just leads you to the Purchase FAQ, which tells you to install MC and choose Buy from the Help menu.  Not very helpful if you've already bought, and want to do it again.   ;D

Thanks for the correction to the FAQ.

To unregister MC (warning, this involves registry editing which can disable your machine if done incorrectly) edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JRiver\Buy Button\2.0\JRiver, Inc.\Media Center and remove all the entries there.

Then purchase the new license for your friend and e-mail it.

Then unregister MC again, and restore your own license.

Is this going to "unregister" my install of both MC11 and MC12?  (If so, I'll do it on a machine that doesn't have MC12 installed yet.)

If I save the mentioned key to a REG file first, and then delete any new one (after buying it through the interface), and restore my old registry stuff by using the REG file, will that fix me all up back to where I was?

If you just delete the appropriate things, it'll only unregister the version you wish.
The procedure I gave above will unregister everything though.

Just to post back that it worked.  Not sure how the Credit Card charge was allowed to go through, since I put in all of my friend's information (name, address, email, etc), but it worked so I'm happy!   ;D

Oh, and restoring the REG file to get my own registration back worked too.  I just made sure MC was closed, deleted the new key when it appeared out of the registry, then restored my REG file I made before deleting it originally.  When I re-opened MC it was registered as me so all was good!

A tad bit complicated, but it worked so no huge deal!
