Resuming Video playback. Can it be disabled?
« on: January 03, 2007, 01:17:15 pm »

Hi,

By default, the video files (xvid avis) playback starts resuming where they were left the previous time. This is causing me some annoyance because of my workflow:

I need to preview some 30/40 seconds of each music video clip after importing, in order to properly tag them with the artist, album, etc. After tagging the videos (or filling the library fields), I send them to playing now... but the "resuming playback" default option makes that every video clip starts playing just where I left them (after those 30/40 second preview). I thought there was an option to start all those video files playback at the beginning instead of resuming playback, but I can't find it. Is it there?? If not, could this be added?

Thanks.

There is no such option.  I would certainly not be opposed to them adding one, though I would not use it (I like the "video bookmarking" feature as it was called).  However... Wouldn't a simple click of the Rewind button (or hitting the appropriate hotkey) before sending the file to Playing Now would solve the issue though, since that rewinds the video to the beginning?

Yes, this is what I do now. The problem is that I normally import 30-35 video clips each time, tag them all and send them to Playing Now to play shuffled with the current list. Each time a video clip starts playing, it does it at the "bookmarked" place. This is annoying when you have a mix Playing Now of 300-400 files, some of which are audio and others are video clips.

I can obviously change my workflow so that after previewing a video clip and tagging it I'll have to remember to press the rewind button to set it to start playback at the beginning, and then press the ffwd button to preview the next video clip, tag it, rewind, ffwd, tag, rewind, and so on... One extra click for every video to tag, not to mention the chance of forgetting to perform that step. A way to set the "video bookmark" as an option would be very welcomed here, although I understand that others may find it useful.

Thank you.

We're thinking about this.  What about one of these solutions?

1.  We just don't set bookmarks if a video has not been played past the two minute mark.

or

2.  When a video or audiobook is played in series with others, we observe the setting for the first file in the series, but not for any following files.

Option 1 would work great for me... and even one minute would be more than enough, if that makes things easier or more acceptable for other people.
Thank you very much for considering it, Jim  :)

Actually, this could be something like 10 minutes. Then MC would continue playing movies and other long video files from the previous stop point if they were seriously watched before stopping, but it would not use this memory with short clips like music videos. So if e.g. a bunch of usual 3-6 minute music videos is loaded into Playing Now MC would play the videos from the beginning regardless if they were previously stopped before the end. Though a 12-minute video that was stopped at 11 min would still be a problem so perhaps a simple manual on/off switch would be nice to have.

This would still be problem when someone starts a video playlist and the first file starts just before the end of the file (e.g. at 11 min of 12 min total.)

I don't use audiobooks, but I'd guess that the users don't usually mix various audiobooks in the same playlist, but if someone does a total "off" switch would probably be preferred.

i would like the possebility to let every video file (or DVD) start from the beginning. even better it would be if there would also be an option to let mc ask, a bit like power dvd does.

Jim's proposed Option 1 would be perfect for me.  I think 2-3 minutes is a good mark though.  I actually use the video bookmarking feature in the first 10 minutes of TV shows quite often, and for video clips that I'm using for editing purposes (which are often quite short).  Somewhere between 1-3 minutes would probably work perfectly.

Option #2 wouldn't help me at all, and could potentially annoy me.

Many times I use the video bookmarking feature when watching TV shows.  For example, I have on my media volume every single episode of Lost that's ever aired, but up until this past New Year's Day I hadn't ever watched a single one of them.  I knew eventually it'd be better to watch that show in a "marathon" session (I'm quite impatient with cliffhangers).

Anyhow, this past New Year's Day while we were nursing hangovers, we started watching the series (a little cheesy, but generally quite good).  However, after stopping to get up and move about, walk the dog, make food, or whatever, we'd often forget which episode we had last watched.

So, after sitting back down, we'd usually just pick one from the list "roughly where we guessed we left off".  We weren't often right, but the bookmarking feature made it easy to tell.  If we'd already watched the episode, it had been would "resume" on the credits were we stopped it last and we'd just hit "next track" on the remote.  If it started at the beginning, we'd skip back to the previous one to find the last one we watched.  This method would quickly reveal that the episode had already been viewed and get us back on our way (or pick back up mid-episode if we left off that way).

Either way, if the bookmarking feature only worked on the first video file played, this wouldn't be good at all!  I'd really prefer an option to just completely disable it (for those who would want it) over this!

A "2 minute system" would not be enough for my music videos. They are usual separate track videos (mostly recorded from MTV and other channels' music programs). Before posting I loaded a playlist of 30 music videos (I might use that kind of playlist when having a party). About half of the videos were previously stopped before the end - some of them very near the end.

The best option would be an on/off switch.

Just an option, "on" OR "off" makes the most sense to me also.

I like bookmarking as it is but I could live with it not kicking in until after a minute. I just think this kind of generic "behaviour" is less intuitive and actually creates confusion. A simple option for this is a clear and concise way to go.
