There have been a few threads recently about DVD playback from the hard drive, and I've been doing this for a while, but am starting to do it more now.

My MC library currently has a mixture of DVDs that are stored in Video_TS subfolders and ones that aren't. I seem to remember that the Video_TS folder was important for MC, but it actually doesn't seem to make any difference: the problem is, that whenever I browse through my collection, they all just appear as "VIDEO_TS".

What should I do to make them appear under the name of the actual DVD? Should I change a particular tag after it's been imported?

I presume it isn't meant to do it automatically? (like use the name of the parent folder, maybe?)

You can tag them in MC.

I have a number of IFO DVDs. After I import them, I change the name to the DVD name. I also do additional tagging.

mc does not need the video ts folder.
im not sure what you mean with ' which tag do you need to use then?'. but when you mean how to get the names in mc right, and the folders the movies are in are named right then right click on one of the files and go to  library tools>fill properties from file name and find something that works for you, depending on the folder structure. when it works for one, try it with selecing more files.
the difficulty is that the name of the first directorie is also useless when its called video-ts, but i gues there is a workaround (i had a lot of ifo's but not in the video-ts folder).

well, as in which field is meant to contain the name of the DVD?

When I browse in Theater View, they're all just list as 'video_ts'....

I dunno, to me the fields for DVDs just don't seem obvious, though - clearly it depends a lot on the type of DVD it is (a music DVD for instance is very different from a TV series DVD...)

When I rip movies, I put them in a folder with the name of the movie. For example, Batman Begins might be in folder d:\movies\Batman Begins\Video_TS\Video_ts.ifo.

After ripping movies, select all the files that show up with a name of video_ts. Right click and select Library Tools > Fill Properties From Filename.

I found the following in the thread entitled How to catalog DVDs? Specifically, assign real movie title instead of VIDEO_TS"\:

     Filename: [Name]\[any unused field 1]\[any unused field 2]

If preferred, you can remove the redundant "VIDEO_TS" values afterwards.

Hm, this is weird...

Having looked at this again, it's no wonder I was getting a bit confused!

My database includes several "video_ts" entries for every DVD I've got in the database.

The number varies - but in some cases there are other 40!

So for instance, if I've got a DVD called "fred", stored in a directory called "fred", the database will have at least one entry with "fred\VIDEO_TS.dvd;1" as the file name. It will probably have about 10 entries, all with the same filename. The filetype is listed as "ifo" and the date is the same for each one (though different for each DVD, obviously) but weirdly the tags vary - so for instance, the genre associated with it varies, and the duration does too.

I presume this isn't normal?

Should I just try deleting all of these from the database and reimport them?

Yes, that's what I would suggest. Older versions of MC12 used to import dvds so that more than 1 file were imported DVDs. So if you have imported these DVDs a while ago this may be an issue. But, if you imported them recently then this may not help but no harm trying.
