iTunes store, EMI, no DRM & higher bitrates
« on: May 08, 2007, 01:24:35 pm »

 ;D

Sounds too cool, but does anyone know WHEN?

I'm all over the itunes store and I'm searching like crazy to find any of these but no joy.

I searched the web, apple site and EMI site for info on a date but other then the press release it seems there's no more info that I can find.

I seem to remember June being mentioned when this was first announced.

Yesterday (wednesday 30 may) iTunes opened iTunes Plus, no DRM and double the bitrate.

OK,

I've upgraded the two tunes and 1 video in my library that are now available DRM free.

I then decided to buy a new album in the new DRM free format with the higher bitrate.

Having done than I can now also add these new tunes to my MC12 library and play them just fine.

The problems occur when I try streaming them to my MP101.

Having selected "convert when necessary" I was hoping that these tracks would convert to MP3 to allow them to be streamed and played.

However even if I try a manual "convert format" I get an error in MC12 telling me I can't convert the file because I may not have the correct "DirectShow" filters.

Is this still a DRM thing or is there some other issues ?

I think it would be nice if users were able to upgrade songs they paid for before, were now 1\2 price to upgrade them.

Apple just dropped the price on these down to the plain ol' $0.99.  More here: http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9798044-7.html

Might be because of rumors of a new service Universal Music (and partners) might be starting up to compete with iTunes called Total Music.

More details here: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_43/b4055048.htm?chan=technology_technology+index+page_best+of+the+magazine

I personally think Total Music is a dumb idea, but what do I know?

Hmm, well with MC now being offered via Time Warner Cable services, I wonder if MC could actually be part of this deal, and compete neck and neck with itunes.

That would be sweet.

You are referring to the store part of it, and not the player part?

It seems like MC is going to be in a lot different online services which is great, but that makes me think in the long run, what do these services have that differntiate themselves?  I guess price, songs, and a little bit of marketing but thats it, everything else is J. Riverized!

I hope one of these gets to become a major player, and can overcome or at least compete with itunes.
