Help with automatic update feature
« on: October 31, 2007, 11:04:36 pm »

Hi. I don't really know how to use these message boards and I can't find any support email addresses on J River's website. I have Windows Vista and I am trying to use the automatic update feature on my Media Center 12.0.154. It says there is a more recent version called 12.0.318. If I click on Help --> Check for Updates, it tries to automatically download and update. The problem is that just when it goes to install, I get an error message saying "Windows does not know what application you want it to use to open this file". Can I just download the 12.0.318 executable and re-install? I figured the "update" feature would just install the new components without having to re-install the entire application. Can anyone help? Thanks.

It sounds like your security may be too tight.  Try going to the download page, downloading, then executing the file.

You will need admin privileges on your PC.

I was able to download the .exe file and I know I'll be able to install it without problems. However, do I need to 1st uninstall my current version of MC and then install the new one? It used to be that you were never supposed to install 1 application on top of an older version of the same application (in general). It would give you an error message saying "an older version of xxx has been detected. Please uninstall that and then re-install xxx. Do you know what I mean? So that's what I was asking about earlier when I wondered if the Update feature of MC knew which components to install ... sort of like when I install updates to Adobe or Java, or even my cursed Windows Vista system. Please let me know what you recommend: (a) uninstall old and then re-install new, or (b) simply install new.
THANKS!!!

Don't uninstall.  Just install the exe.
