Installation of MC12 fails on Win98SE
« on: May 15, 2008, 03:37:01 pm »

All attempts to install MC12 on my Win98SE box have failed. In all cases, the installer routine starts, the progress bar moves across the field but, then the window disappears. No "wizard" shows-up and there are no error messages.
I have tried ALL the suggestions in the WIKI with exactly the same results. I also tried installing from Safe Mode - nada! I tried first running the program&process closing utility "EndItAll" to close AV stuff and free-up all available system resources - no joy!!
I'm out of ideas - anyone else have some ??
Regards, Phil

Ehm... Install XP?

Seriously, i don't know which kind of computer you're trying to run MC on, but if it's a machine from the "Win9x-era", you won't have much fun with MC on that machine. The slowest machine i've been running MC on was a PII-350, and doing anything else than simple playing back audio on that machine used to be a test of patience.

Oh, and i won't even go into detail how instable and insecure Win9x is compared to W2K or XP. Running a Win9x machine connected to the internet is basically a warm invitation to virii, trojans and malware of all kinds.

This machine (Win98SE my workhorse PC) is a pIII, 833mh and is fast enough to do what I need to do. I also have PCs running Win2000Pro and XP,SP2 . I may also try MC on the XP box at some point, but I don't need it there now. So, as to my question...

There was a conversation down the hall yesterday about this.  I didn't hear the details.  Please bump this again on Monday and I'll find out.

I can't imagine any companies putting much effort into making an application compatible to a 10 year old OS :)
Maby J River is different though....

Don't say how much memory you have but if its 256MB then a leaner XP should work just fine, specs wise, but i think you would be better off with an OS upgrade to Win2K or XP. Forget video, this will only be an audio machine.

Don't expect any fancy vizzies to work with it too well, just plain album art as you will in effect be dedicating the pc just to MC for the most part.

Make sure you store all media on the internal dirves instead of relying on external ones.

To each his own, but I'm having a hard time reconciling "Win98SE" with "workhorse PC".  IME, Win98 was never stable nor secure enough for anything that could be considered a "workhorse", but perhaps the OP has massaged and patched it to the point that it's workable.

Good luck with that.

You might try MJ12.  It has less features and therefore less things to trip an obsolete OS.  I'd be surprised if it ran.  But it is worth a shot.
