Topic: Transporting LCD on road trip (Read 4605 times)

I'm going on a very long road trip and need to know what the best method is for transporting my 24" widescreen Samsung LCD so it doesn't get damaged. I was originally thinking of a second display (smaller or larger) but decided one would be enough hassle and worry.

I may have the original packaging somewhere but it isn't incredibly likely as lately I've been more concerned with getting rid of stuff like that since it piles up so quickly. Should I transport it sitting upright? Laying face down or up seems somewhat dangerous as the glass can flex and potentially shatter. I want to pack it as carefully as possible because it is a very long trip and could include some less than ideal driving conditions, obviously.

Well, I paid $700 and see it is now going for over $1,100 on Amazon (not sure why) so I could make a profit...

But it looks like it is no longer in stock...not sure why. And of course if I were to buy another one, I would NOT sell the one I have. Then I would absolutely get a 30" because I want one

Now may be a good time. I have gotten a new computer LCD every 14 months for the past 4 years. I would be a few months ahead of schedule

(addition) what an IDEA. You are making me seriously consider that! I would love to get a 30" and now is actually a good time for a host of reasons.

Why is the original box so useful? I really don't like the buying a 30" out there "idea" because then I have to haul it back home! I was thinking I'll lay it with the glass facing up, laying on several layers of soft towels...covered in one, too.

Softly pressing on the LCD screen mile after mile until it is dead. Now if your LCD has a glass cover that keeps you from touching the actual panel, go nuts.

In its original box, it would have been upright (right?) as if it was sitting on a desk? Maybe I should set it up on its stand. Does styrofoam really help reduce constant shaking and road noise? I would think it is too rigid and doesn't help a huge amount.

So when people buy LCDs, they should carefully pick a location because they can't ever move them again (more than a few miles)?

As far as an LCD dying....we have at least 7 plus 3 laptop LCDs and have never lost one yet...outside of a cheap brand one. But in that one the power supply failed. It was replaced under warranty. The rest of them are good brands. I just don't really experience equipment "breaking" ... EVER! I guess there are a few limited cases but it's always because of something stupid I did. I don't consider transporting on a road trip something stupid.

I think that depends on how much they take LCD.

This just gets better and better...

Seriously, I have transported LCD screens numerous times quite carelessly in big sport bags or similar without harming the displays anyway. Just take care that there is no direct pressure against the display screen area.

That's what I would have thought. I did too! I transported a 27" LCD and think I put it face down on a blanket...looking back, that was probably a stupid move. It was a 5 hour car drive.

I guess the key question here is: sitting on the stand upright or laying backwards face up?

The road trip went great. I detached the stand from the monitor and kept it separate. Then, I put the display on its back on about 4 inches of soft foam. Then, I put a soft cardboard box around 3 sides of the monitor to protect against upward (hit trunk door) and sideways movements, which were also covered in a few inches of foam. That and my computer still work fine after probably two thousand miles. So I'm now in California as opposed to Iowa. Just for a few months until I return for more college.

My cousin and I looked into a 3 bedroom apartment on the beach. Each a bedoom and a shared office. Unfortunately, covering the $15,000 per month would be a bit tight at this point in my life.

Dude, do not let this opportunity slip through your fingers. So the rents are a little higher out here. Take your camera down to the beach tomorrow, get your dad some reference footage. Many people in Los Angeles support their extravagant lifestyles through a life of crime. Have you considered this? After all, Los Angeles is the bank robbery and insurance fraud capitol of the world. Neither one of these take much brains or preparation. I say, go out in a blaze of glory!

Or, you could go into the movie biz. Do you know how to get a business card printed up? I'll grant you, with only a business card it may be some time before you get your first project funded, but believe me, a well-written business card will get you a lot of mileage in certain bars in Los Angeles. What more do you need?
