DVD playback error

Transferred this from another thread:

cjdshaw:

Just got a DVD drive (LG GCC-4120B) and WinDVD and I'd hoped I could play DVD's in MJ with this combination.

Firstly, on clicking on the drive, I see all the tracks listed rather than a single entity. Without access to the DVD menu system, it's quite tricky to navigate these tracks. All this is irrelevant though, because....

DVD's that fine under WinDVD give this error:
Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed.
Can't play back this DVD-Video disk.

JimH:

cjdshaw,
Did you install the software that came with the drive?
If you need help on this, please copy your message to a new thread. I don't think there is a bug involved.

Jim: The only software that came with the drive was Roxio and DirectCD which I didn't install. I've always been happy with Nero for CD burning. The copy of WinDVD 2.6 came with my USB sound card (Abit UA-11)

I've just reinstalled ASPI 4.71 and downloaded WinDVD 4 demo version but I still get the same error.

I also often get an Application Error soon after trying to play the DVD. e.g.
The instruction at "0x02a1252f" referenced memory at "0x0000001c". The memory could not be "read"

You Should Have Had Some DVD Software (I Would Think) That Came With The Drive. I Never Heard Of A DVD Drive That Did Not Come With It.

Nope. I did get two copies of the "Getting Started with CD Writing" booklet, so I suppose it could have been a packaging error. Still, given that WinDVD 2.6 and 4 demo work OK on their own, is there any reason the filters shouldn't work through MJ?

cjdshaw,
You MUST install the manufacturer's software for that drive.

I've just dug out the manual. It wasn't supposed to come with any software other than the CD Recording Software Disk. It also says:

When using Windows 95/98/2000/ME/XP or Windows NT Workstation Ver.4.0, no special device driver is required.

I've got a copy of PowerDVD that came with my graphics card, so I might try that later. I've got a standalone multiregion player I use mostly so it doesn't bother me that much. However, I do consider it something of a failing of MJ that it's so much more specific about hardware and drivers than WinDVD.

WinDVD installs it's own mpeg-2 decoder. MJ depends on another decoder being installed and usually works fine using the one from WinDVD. However, it's possible that WinDVD has some built in protection to keep other software from using their decoder (recent versions of PowerDVD do this). You could try the free decoder package listed on this page (look for the link "Free DVD Filters"):
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding_plugin.html

If you have an older version of PowerDVD it might work with MJ also.

I installed the filters you recommended and nothing changed. I then uninstalled WinDVD and MJ DVD playback started working. I tried reinstalling WinDVD 2.6 and MJ DVD now crashed every time.

So I'm now in two minds as to whether to keep WinDVD, which has more features, or go with MJ which integrated better with my HTPC. Is there any way to force MJ to use the FreeDVD filters rather than the WinDVD ones?

On a related note, I couldn't find much in the docs about DVD playback. If MJ can't find a set of filters, couldn't it pop up a message box saying:

Please install the DVD software that came with your drive. If you have no software, install the free codecs from http://www.maximusdvd.com/freedvdcodecs.htm

or alternatively, distribute those codecs with MJ. It could be made a lot easier for the beginner

I agree that MJ could use some improvement in this area, such as being able to select the mpeg2 decoder to use as you suggested. Bundling them would be great but it's a licensing problem. I'll look into this to see if there's a relatively easy way to get MJ to work with both WinDVD and the free filters installed.
