excessive memory usage
« on: September 16, 2008, 06:38:16 pm »

I've noticed for a while that MC seems to use a lot more memory than I would think is necessary and it is always increasing. I've read some older threads on this, but didn't find anything useful. I've tried disabling my virus checker and I've tried disabling all plugins. Currently I'm using MC 533.

For me, after starting up MC is using upwards of 50MB (that's with 6,600 tracks in Playing Now). Unfortunately, this usage seems to increase every time it plays a new track. One thing I should mention is that I'm accessing the library over a VPN to a network drive. I don't know if this makes a difference.

Minimizing and restoring the MC window does seem to free some memory, but not all of it and not the leak associated with playing new tracks. Some stats are below with mem sizes is MB.

After track 7 I didn't see any increase so I switched to Display View (track info Noire), which is how I usually leave MC playing.

There are many possibilities, including a possible leak.

Import
Analysis
Thumbnailing
Cover Art
Memory leaks in third party plug-ins.

etc.

Let it run overnight and see what happens.

I wasn't able to let it run over night, but a short period of about 1/2 hour this morning with nothing playing showed no memory usage increase. But, as soon as I start playing tracks again the memory usage starts climbing as before.

So far it seems that being in Display View is the biggest problem. After a while the VM usage goes to upwards of 400MB used and never decreases, even if I minimize MC.

This PC has no auto-import settings and I've tried not running any plug-ins, except last.fm, which is always active.

Any other suggestions to try to figure this out?

What are you playing?

Simplify as much as you can.  Uninstall visualizations, uninstall last.fm, etc.  Is the last.frm plug-in the one that comes with MC?

Hmm, it seems it is related to a plugin after all. I'm still investigating the details.
