Media Server Streaming Issue
« on: March 03, 2003, 11:51:04 am »

I have seen random problems streaming with Media Server for a long time but I have never been able to figure out why certain songs in my Library do not stream.

I finally figured it out: any song with an ' in the title (not sure if this is an IDv3 or filename issue) will not stream.

Anyone else know about this and if there is a solution other than renaming all my files?

In the media jukebox client, try a seach of ' and then try to stream any song. For me, they don't stream. I have over 1000 songs in my library with a '

Hi Jim,

I continue to see this problem. Has it been addressed in a different thread?

Will you update to the latest version and confirm the problem still exists?

I cannot reproduce this, nor connect to your server. Can you copy-and-paste one of the file titles here? It is important to use copy-and-paste and not type it by hand. Sometimes quotes are actually other characters.

sorry... I was having a problem with my router.

jhc.servemp3.com is now up

Do a search for '

Any song that is brought up will not play for me. Any other song plays fine.

I am not sure what you want me to copy. Do you mean *.mp3 where * is the filename?

Hi Jaysee,

For the moment , I'm stumped. It does seem to be related to quotes, but I cannot reproduce it locally, only when connecting to your server. Can you post the help->about merdia server information?

You might want to try Media Center:

www.mediajukebox.com/mc

It uses a Media Server that is version 1.0.158.  Sounds like there may be a bug in the version you have and that it's been fixed sometime since.

You could also use the tools to rename files.

OK I tried upgrading to media center. I still have the same problem. Cannot stream any file with a '. I am at my wits end with this. I am reluctant to batch process all of my mp3s to remove ' because would cause spelling errors, and I went through a lot of work to get the tags and filenames correct in the first place.

Any other ideas?

Hi Jaysee,

Try this: choose one file that fails, and rename that one (removing the quotes). Verify that the renamed file doesn't fail. I think the renamed file will fail. In either case let me know (and you can change the name back after the test).

Upgrading to Media Center yielded the answer, and it looks like a bug to me. When I tried to stream files with an ' to my client, the attempts failed as usual. However, on the server machine, Media Center displayed this error window:

http://jeancote.servehttp.com:81/sites/mjs_error.jpg

It appears that media server is putting in a \ in front of the ' which is breaking the path.

Hi Jaysee,

I can't find anywhere Media Server does that. Files in my library with a quote work.

Did you try renaming a single file (removing the quote) to see if that worked?

Any instance of a quote (') in the path of the file will break the stream. I proved this to myself several times by renaming files from properties.

As soon as I remove quotes from the path, everything works fine. Media Server is seems to look at quotes as a delimiter indicating a subfolder.

If the path has no quotes, but the ID3v2 tags do have quotes, there is no problem.

see jhc.servepics.com to test this.

Examples of filename path that fails:

m01p://jhc.servemp3.com:80/E:\My Documents\mp3s\Music\Celtic\Loreena Mckennitt\The Book of Secrets\08 - Loreena Mckennitt - Dant's Prayer.mp3

m01p://jhc.servemp3.com:80/E:\My Documents\mp3s\Music\Jazz\Edith Piaf\The Very Best of Edith Piaf\18 - Edith Piaf - L'accordeoniste.mp3

m01p://jhc.servemp3.com:80/E:\My Documents\mp3s\Music\Classical\Ennio Morricone\The Mission\13 - Ennio Morricone - M - Gabriel's Oboe.mp3
