Duplicate and/or corrupt files when ripping, applying cover art?
« on: December 20, 2009, 11:54:08 pm »

At times when I am ripping files from an audio CD, when completed I get an error about tagging, and when I look at the folder, there are one or more files with the designation ".YYYYYY" that appear corrupt and are in addition to a good file taken from the same track.  I can simply delete these, but have to check for them every time I rip a CD.  Also, when I remove and replace the cover art for tracks taken from a CD, I am getting duplicate mp3 files created without the artwork for some tracks.  I am running Windows 7 and am ripping CD's to 320 mp3's (fixed rate) on a Dell Inspiron 1525.  Thanks for any help/ Below is system info:

Correction of original post/question.  The corrupt files (.YYYYYY) were created when using MJ 12.  I upgraded to MC 14, but am still getting duplicate files when ripping (it may be happening during the tagging process, perhaps when adding art after ripping) and when changing album art.  Thanks for any help.

I have not seen anything like that happening.

Could it be caused by an overactive virus checker that would prevent MC from accessing the files?

Back in the MC 9.1, 10 and 11 days, we used to see quite a lot of those .XXXX and .YYYY files. They were temp files, usually used by MC when writing tags to a file required that the entire file be re-written to accommodate the incoming tags. MJ should have cleaned those up after itself, but for some reason, did not. Perhaps, as Alex has suggested, a virus checker had locked the file preventing MJ from deleting them?

The only other thing I can think of is that you are running Media Center 14 build 14.0.96.

Build 14.0.140 is available for download on the Media Center download page.
The absolute first thing you must do is download and install this release, then check to see if that on its own is enough to fix your problem. This build includes a fix for a problem with windows 7 that was caused by redirection to virtual folders when running with UAC enabled.
Posted on the 30th November 2009, build 106 contained the following:
Quote
2. Changed: Minor application manifest change that should disable any UAC redirection (and the problems associated with redirection).
I'm not sure if this is where your problem is coming from, but would seem to me like the best place to start.

Certainly, the first thing anyone from JRiver will ask you to do is to update your MC, so better for you if you've already done that.
You do not need to uninstall your current Media Center, simply download the upgrade and install it "over the top" of your existing installation.

Good luck,
regards,
marko.

Please update to the build on the download page.  Just download and install it.

Thanks for all the attention to my little fit of pique!  After the good responses I got, I had to go back and try to pinpoint the problem a bit. I did update to Build 14.0.140.  Then I watched more closing as files were being ripped, and I am still getting some duplicate files.  The majority seem to be appearing when the art is added to the file (during the rip of the album, or after when I add or change the art).  I did have a duplicate appear on one rip when there was no album art.  Some of the duplicate files do not have any tag information, along with having no art, although the file name is there.  I am wondering about the virus protection software idea, although only a few (2 or 3, maybe 4 or 5 at the most) files on each album ripped are affected.  Any other thoughts would be helpful. I am running Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 1525, using Trend Micro Internet Security. I have added Media Center to programs for Trend Micro to allow (I think this relates to internet access), but am not sure this would affect tagging or deleting files.  Thanks again!

The problem does go away when I turn off TrendMicro Internet Security.  Not sure this is a complete solution. though!  I will see if there are any threads about setting antivirus to stop this, but if you can give me some pointers here, that would be great.  Thanks!
