14.0.140 What does "Status: Duplicate" actually mean?
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:44:29 am »

Can someone tell me what "Status: Duplicate" in the Device view actually means?

I have many a file marked thus even though no other files have the same field content or audio.

Thanks.

Just so you know you are not crazy, I have seen this as well.... :)

However I've never really tried to trouble shoot it. I'm guessing it has to do with slightly corrupt files. You could try re-encoding the offending files and see if the problem continues...

No evidence of corruption found here. The files load fine in WMP, MediaMonkey, GoldWave and Winamp.

I did and it didn't! Thanks. I guess there's a bug in the MC duplicate detection, sensitive to the precise encoding.

I spoke too soon. When I next cleared and refilled the library (attempting to workaround a different failure) the 'fixed' files were again reported as Duplicate. :(

Well I've seen this for a couple of years at least on a couple of files. At least I know it isn't corrupt files. :)

MC just forced and update on me - now I have hundreds of files marked Duplicate, and unable to sync :(

Ouch, how big is your library? I have about 12,000 audio files and there were only three that caused the duplicate errors thing.

1927 tracks, ~100 playlists.

Perhaps the files are already on the device? MC see's it's own files as duplicates so it doesn't upload them? Try clearing the device and see if new sync works correctly...

This is where user documentation for MC would be really useful.

It was already freshly formatted.

Nope :(

So far I have not managed to get one successful sync to device. I have tried three Creative ZENs on two MC versions.

Please? Surely someone here from JRiver must know...

Did you also check the actual filenames?

I wonder if logging could reveal something. You can enable logging from the Help menu. It might be enough to set it to log only "Handheld" and start it only just before a sync attempt (in order to create a smaller and more readable log file).

Sorry, but check them for what?

The filenames on the device vs. the filenames on your hard drive.

I don't have a Creative device, but at least a Handheld that shows up as a standard drive stores the original filenames. Depending on your defined folder structure conflicts may be possible.

Thanks.

For the record, that problem on a Creative ZEN occurs also on a HD drive letter device.

There are no filenames on the device because, as I said, the device is freshly formatted.

I just tested syncing files that have identical filenames, artist and album tags, but different name tags (they were coming from a separate folder). The duplicate filenames were handled automatically. MC added an (1) string to the filenames. So, probably the filenames are not causing the problem.

Do you use the "conversion cache" feature? I don't really trust it and, as I said in the other thread, I use a "virtual handheld" instead.

Oops, I see.

So, would it be possible that your settings would create duplicate filenames (including the path)?

For instance, something like: \various artists\track1.mp3 from two or more source files.

- I mean, perhaps the automatic duplicate names prevention does not work if one of the duplicates is not already on the device.

BTW, perhaps I am a wrong person to answer this. I have never seen the "Duplicate" value in the Status field with my devices.

Since I am using the default settings, that would be most sad.

So the audio path in the Handheld options is [Artist]\[Album]\ and the source filenames follow the [Artist] - [Name] rule. If I recall correctly, these are the defaults. Correct?

Though, I don't think the default settings should cause problems.

Do you use the conversion cache? Could you try logging?

Personally I would try to reproduce the problem with a small newly created test library, but I am not saying that you are supposed to go through that kind of troubleshooting process.
