My normal filename rule is "[Artist] - [Album] - [Track #] - [Name]" which works fine most of the time and allows files to sort nicely if I put multiple albums into a single directory (though I typically use "[Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]" as my folder rule).  However for compilations with multiple artists, it results in a mess.  The mess can be dealt with by using a rule such as "[Album Artist (auto)] - [Album] - [Track #] - [Name] ([Artist])" or "[Album] - [Track #] -  [Artist] - [Name]", but using that for all rips results in the artist name being in the filename twice or results in albums across artists sorting by the album name rather than by artist.

It would be nice to see an additional option that allows for a different filename rule for albums that fall into the "Multiple Artists" category.

I realize that I could use a filename rule like "[Album] - [Track #] - [Artist] - [Name]", but that would result in a mess if files were put into a single folder.

What are other people doing to deal with this?

My normal rule is [Genre]\[Artist]\[Release] [Album]\[Track #] [Name], and for multiple artist albums I change it to [Genre]\[Album]\[Track #] [Artist] - [Name] or Classical\[Conductor]|[Performer] - [Album]\[Track #] [Composer] - [Name]. So it varies by the nature of the album, but anything that's to be handled as an album has to be in it's own folder.

You might have missed the fact the rule boxes are designed allow for the easy changing of rules. They have context menus for selecting recent or preset rules. I don't bother, but if you'd rather this be handled automatically, use expressions that adapt to whatever the circumstance (e.g., to produce different results for regular, multiple-artist and multiple-artist classical albums).

Thanks - I had missed that expressions could be used to adapt the rule - I suspect that will take care of my needs as I should be able to omit the ending ([Artist]) if [Album Artist (auto)] is equal to [Artist].

I'm not seeing the rule boxes (in Options -> File Location -> Audio -> Filename rule) keeping recent rules, just 5 preset rules plus the custom option which allows a free-form rule to be added.

Sorry, I was referring to the rule boxes in Rename, Move and Copy Files. I have the file location in options set to write files to an "Incoming" folder, were ripped and downloaded files stay until they're tagged. I use a separate view that shows only media in that folder (and media of all types). When I'm satisfied they're tagged correctly, I move them using Rename, Move and Copy Files. There's a good description of a similar process here.

Gotcha.  Thanks - I'll read that thread more carefully when I've got some time available.  Today is a busy day for some reason ;D.
