MJ8 replacement for categories
« on: June 04, 2002, 11:39:54 pm »

I seem to remember Matt saying that the MJ7 categories have been replaced by smartlists in MJ8.  Could someone expound (verbosely, if you wish) on this?  Soon, very soon, I will be upgrading several PC's to 8.  With the workload this last year, I simply haven't been able to participate in beta8, so I will be a neophyte.  Please, ramble on.  I carefully categorized my entire library (using about 5 main categories), and use these in a rule in every smartlist.  I'd like to understand this before diving in.

JimH - Something is clearly wrong with Interact.  It's been over 30 minutes since my post, and no one has replied!  otoh, maybe they are writing their dissertations offline?  Scronch

Hi Scronch,

I think it's quite early in the morning at the moment in Minneapolis,
Jim is most probably fast asleep ! (sweet dreams Next Page )

Regarding MJ7 categories, I think they have been moved in a folder named
Organization in the Media Lib. When upgrading from 7 to 8 my experience was
that all my MJ7 smartlists where lost and my categories moved into that (Organization) folder.
I must admit that I have lost a lot of my MJ7    skills since then, so I don't
quite remember exactly MJ7 categories. All that I know is that they are now
handled through standard playlists or smartlists.

Have a good & nice day.

OK, but how are the MJ7 category assignmens migrated into MJ8?  In MJ7, a category assignment for a certain song was written to the MJ database, and of course was not in the song file's tags.  Now, in MJ8, if categories no longer exist, what is used to replace them?

Example: Consider all the songs from a given album.  They are in the database to allow listening to the entire album.  But for smartlists, say only 2 of the songs are to be considered in the "Main" group.  In MJ7, they have a category of "Main", and the remaining songs from the album do not have the "Main" assignment--they may have a category like "Other" or "Halloween" or something like that, but not "Main".  So what's the best way to capture this type of categorization in MJ8, and how well will the migration work to enable that method?

Scronch, MJ 8 combines MJ 7's playlists and categories into one far more powerful and flexible system -- simply called playlists.  All of your categories will be upgraded to this new system when you run 8 the first time.

Later.

Hey Scronch.  Been behavin' have you?

I can't answer all your questions but as far as I remember, categories are turned into playlists (rather than smartlists as has been suggested).  And since you already have playlists in v7, I guess some of your questions may be answered.

Yeah, I never understood what the fundamental difference between a playlist and a category was supposed to be anyway. I think it's much more streamlined this way.
