I’m running MC 16.0.121 for the first time.  On installation, MC16 found my Apple lossless compression (ALAC) audio files stored on the C: drive and now lists them in the MC16 Playing Now list with the m4a file type.  I can play these audio files from this list.

My question:  Is MC16 playing these audio files back as Apple lossless compression (ALAC) files, or as Apple lossy (AAC) files?   

One reason I ask is because in the MC16 menu at  Tools > Options > File Types under the Audio heading, Apple lossless compression (ALAC) is not listed as a file type choice.  However, another Apple file type is listed:  AAC audio (m4a, aac).  ALAC files are higher generally in sound quality than AAC lossy files and I would like to playback the higher ALAC format.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you can share.

Media Center 16 offers native, bit-perfect, lossless decoding of ALAC files.

Matt, when will it be possible to natively code ALAC so I can use it on my iPod.

Or is there another trick now. Last time I asked was about 5 years ago :-)

MC's External Encoder can create ALAC files through the qaac program. qaac is a command line front end application for the QuickTime AAC and ALAC encoders.
