Problem With Video Display and Aspect Ratio [Solved]
« on: July 09, 2011, 02:00:26 am »

Hi.
I've been using MC since version 14 and never had a problem.
Now after I upgrade to MC16 there were no issues playing all my video files and the library also was fine. About a month ago I was paying some videos then a new update was installed and suddenly when the MC was restarted all the video icons in the library start to change. First I didn't pay much attention but when I start playing videos some of them look just like a bar in the middle of the screen. The next two images is with the video settings all by default and the source aspect ratio
Like this:

And this is how it supposed to look like, changing the aspect ratio to 16:9

So I tried to config the video settings from "Red October" to "Windows merit based" and selecting "J.river video engine (using DirectShow filters) and it does start the video properly but when it changes to the next clip doesn't play it with the right aspect ratio, it plays sort of like 4:3 aspect ratio. but the small thumbnails are still wrong.
This is happening only with some videos with 16:9 aspect ratio and some resents and other old ones.
The files are 720x480 mpg2
I also did a full removal of the program, download the MC 16.0123 version which is the latest and rebuilt the library from zero and still the same.

Is there any suggestion?
Is it a bug in the Red October?

Now I am sure that is a problem with red october because again I did a full uninstallation and installed a MC 16.064 and averything worken fine, then did the update and the videos again were played wrong.
Also if I choose the ROHQ the program closes immediately.

Thanks

Any way you can upload one of the broken files (via MegaUpload or something similar) so that we can test one?  I'm not seeing anything similar.  I wonder if you have some broken/special files there.

Where are these videos sourced from?  Are they a variety of different types and/or sources, or all of a similar type?  It looks like in your screenshots there that you have some video files that are working/thumbnailing correctly, but a big set (like the Whitesnake folder) that are not.

Yes, I used the whitesnake as example, but all of them I ripped from the original dvd and compressed to 720x480.
Is strange because I am using the same program to compress all the videos and I did it with the ACDC new concert from bluray but i have no problem with that one.

While I was trying to upload the video (where megaupload always showed an error message) I notice that the videos with that problem are mpg1 at 720x480 something new. But still, before was working and now not.

I'm uploading now through depositfile but is gonna take some time.

Thanks for the file.  I can reproduce the issue.

I'll follow-up when we learn more.

Thanks for that.
But is that happening in your MC too?

Yes.  That's what he means.  There must be something "funny" about those files.

It looks like the latest version of libavcodec (used for decoding MPEG-1 video) fixes the issue of reporting an incorrect ideal aspect ratio.

Look for this fix to be included with Media Center in a coming build.

Thanks.

Hi, I've been waiting for some News.
Do I have to do any special setup under the video settings?
Is that problem gonna be fixed in the upcoming version?
Just downloaded the 16.0.137 version and if I setup MPEG Video to automatic with RO HQ it doesn't play and the program closes.
Only works with Windows media player engine
Thanks

Yes, that's what Matt said, except he used the word 'build' instead of version. And since he said 'an upcoming build, it may not be the very next one.

I updated the MC to 16.0.139 (not a fresh installation just update) and the problem is still the same.
Maybe the next build??
Thank you, keep me posted

FYI - the sample plays fine for me (a slightly later version of MC but I don't see anyting in the change log that would make a difference to V139).  I tried it with RO, RO HQ (also checked various combos of FFDSHOW, LAVVideo (both use libavcodec) with EVR and madVR - all fine for me).  Can you manually change the aspect ratio to make it look correct?  If so check to see there is not some odd setting in the "Playback Info" field.
