DVD playback problem
« on: August 20, 2011, 10:22:59 am »

I have a problem using the new Red October video playback!

.... DVD playback - resulting in no video (black screen) and perfect audio.

After the update the settings were:
General video settings
- directshow selection method: red october standard (recommended)
Result: Video NO/ Audio YES

I tried both media center restart and reboot

I tried this:
advanced/red october with aditional filters and selected Playback method: windows media player engine
Result: Video YES/ Audio YES - But this disables most of the very nice right click options (especially subtitles)

Just to check I went back to directshow selection method: red october standard (recommended)
and this is now working - BUT without the right click options I recall from the past

Again just to check I tried this on 4 different computers - all with the same result

We have heard a few reports of this, but haven't been able to reproduce it.

When it shows a black screen, try switching the aspect ratio and then switch it back.  This is a workaround until we can figure out what is happening.

To stream video to the Android, the latest version of Gizmo must be downloaded from the Market.  It's 156.

DVD playback problem
« Reply #3 on: August 20, 2011, 11:08:53 am »

hi again

as mentioned I have 4 computers all showing the same issue - so I should be able to test any solution  ;D

I tried switching the aspect ratio and then switch it back no change (after a few freezes an reboots)

media center now play video but retain the rightclick menu of the windows media player playback option with very few options included - and that is a problem when we need to change between subtitles & language.

I will test this with a few other dvd's again....

Sounds like you're still using the WMP engine to play.  Uncheck that option.

hi

good idea (partly)

I had this setting: red october standard
changes back to: advanced/red october with aditional filters and windows media player engine was still enabled as selected Playback method
changed to Playback method: automatic
and changed back to: red october standard

result: Video NO /Audio YES

hmmmm  ?

but the nice rightclick menu is back  :)

hi

I can see that on my last media center installation that has not been updated yet (running 16.0.64) the settings are:

- playback method: automatic
- audio decoders: automatic
- video decoders: automatic
- video rendere: enhanced video rendere

when I try these settings using 16.0.156
by selecting:
- red october with additional filters
- playback method: automatic
- audio decoders: automatic
- video decoders: automatic
- video rendere: enhanced video rendere

the result is NO Video and ok audio

I can confirm this is also still a problem for me in 16.0.156. Changing aspect ratio brings back the video.

I am also getting no video on DVD playback using ROHQ. I don't know if it makes any difference but these are PAL DVDs.

Manually selecting an aspect ratio does bring the video up, and so is a workaround for me.

Are all the users with this issue PAL users?  That would be a good clue.

Matt I just tried a NTSC DVD and that didn't exhibit the problem, so PAL format may be contributing to the problem.

I'm having this problem too and yes, I'm playing PAL DVDs. It's hard to reproduce at will. Switching views (tview display view and back again) usually fixes it for me. I'll try to grab a log of the problem....

Could be acceleration related?

I have (only) one DVD, that shows a black screen.
that particular dvd has a DVD menu with a bunch of small videoclips playing. I don't know if that's related.

If I switch from EVR (i.e. all automatic, red october) to default video renderer=VMR9 (red october with additional filters), then the problem is gone..

(hardware acceleration is unchecked, that option  caused errors for a few other HD movies, not dvd's)

note that this problem only only happens on one (windows 7) PC with an older nvidia graphics board (most recent drivers).
on another pc (with a newer ATI card) I can leave all settings to automatic.

I'm having odd issues with DVD too.

All PAL discs (videoTS folders on hard drive)
ROHQ 16.156

No video on starting a DVD. Change of aspect ratio fixed it. Video plays ok next time around too.

Seek (either arrow left or right) seems broken. Some files just don't seek and some crash MC (Not responding in task manager). Play/ pause is OK. Also right click and selecting chapter is broken.

Not sure if others are seeing this issue too.

I haven't much time at the moment to fiddle and see if there's a simple fix with settings. I'll have a go later in the week and get some log files showing consistent behaviour if I can. And also try with the original discs in the drive to see if it makes a difference. Which options do you want checked for the log files as there seems to be an awful lot of information in there!??

I have tried a NTSC DVD this afternoon and playback is OK.

The problem occurs with PAL DVD.

Is there some easy way JRiver could get a PAL DVD for testing?  Does Amazon sell them to US customers or Netflix offer them for example?

Thanks.

Here is a short PAL DVD Sample (shows the issue).  It is a real DVD but with only 1 min of main video (if you play the main video it will stop ungracefully at 59sec)!

I think this should be fixed in 16.0.157 and later.

After starting playback, the video is positioned.  But if the playback isn't ready to accept a position call yet, positioning would not be retried.

Here's an updated JRPlayer.dll if you'd like to test (requires Media Center 16.0.156 to be installed first):
http://files.jriver.com/temp/JRPlayer.dll

Thanks.

Great! This seems to fix the problem for me. I have just tried the DLL file on two different computers with a bunch of PAL DVD's and it's all good.

Thanks Matt!

Thanks,

No more blank screen on startup, but I am still getting program crashes on seek.

Not sure if it is a related issue.

Updated to latest release today and still have this problem here. Pal DVD. Black screen with audio. Red October hq. Aspect ratio workaround fixes it.

Once you've fixed it with the aspect ratio change, what happens if you stop and restart again? For me this worked fine on the second go, even after clearing the tags (press stop twice). So difficult to tell if it is completely fixed as it wasn't completely reproducible.

Does anyone else have a program crash with seeking a PAL DVD? Pressing either the left or right arrow causes a program hang for me. Task manager says not responding.

You have to manually copy the DLL file Matt links to above. A version with this fix has not been released yet.

I don't have problems with seeking in my DVD's stored on a NAS.

Updated to 160 last night and guess what? First DVD I tried - black screen and OK audio! Changed aspect ratio, still no video. Changed view to 100% and bingo video came back! Then reset the settings to what they were and all is still OK. No black screen now on starting any DVD. Very bizarre....

On another thread Jim suggested a reboot for a bizarre problem, so after upgrading I rebooted and the crash on seek has gone. So whether it was 160 or the reboot that fixed it I do not know.

Thanks very much guys!

SBR

Edit - oops it was Matt in the 159 thread. Thanks.
