New MC16 Features and Upgrade Instructions

16.0.179 (9/28/2011)

1. Fixed: Parametric Equalizer could fail to save changes in some cases.

16.0.178 (9/26/2011)

1. Changed: In digital television the generic Network Provider filter is tried before trying network specific Network Provider filter.  Should be internal change only but please report any problems you notice.
2. Fixed: VOB playback with no accompanying IFO was not working properly.
3. Fixed: VOB subtitle streams that were resized independently of the movie could appear in the wrong location.
4. Fixed: JRSS downmixing could have too high of an output level.

16.0.177 (9/16/2011)

1. Changed: Improved DVB-T channel scanning for UK and other European countries.
2. Fixed: The option "Keep only x episodes" of television subscription recordings did not work (no recordings were ever deleted).
3. Fixed: Random-type smartlists were not refreshing properly when browsing with DLNA.
4. Changed: Red October uses LAV CUVID 0.13.

16.0.176 (9/15/2011)

1. Fixed: When a file previously marked as bad was later imported, it would not have its name filled automatically.
2. Fixed: Having the auto-import option to 'Update for external changes' disabled could (still) lead to problems with files that were marked as bad.

16.0.175 (9/13/2011)

1. Changed: Red October uses LAV 0.35 filters.
2. Fixed: Zooming into the selected thumbnail would not work properly if the scroll position was at the top of the list.
3. Fixed: The Theater View file info panel option to hide empty values did not work properly for the rating field.
5. Changed: Auto-import works better with removed and bad files when the options to 'Update for external changes' and 'Fix broken links' are disabled.
6. Changed: Doing 'Update Library (from tags)' on a file in the bad database will move the file out of the bad location into the main database if it succeeds.
7. Fixed: Screen grabbing of videos wouldn't work properly for some types.
8. Changed: After tagging Media Center explicitly sets the last modified time of the tagged file instead of assuming the file system will do it automatically (because network file systems are sometimes slow to update automatically).

16.0.174 (9/12/2011)

1. Fixed: Files that got imported while they were in the process of downloading or copying could get stuck in the 'bad database' location.
2. Changed: Media Center is better at automatically selecting forced subtitle streams in videos.
3. Fixed: DLNA. A change made in 16.0.111 caused MC to return a slightly different URL in status calls than was originally provided by MC's DLNA server (when the same instance of MC was being used as the server and renderer). This caused undesirable behavior for some control points (i.e. PlugPlayer).
4. Changed: Red October nicely handles the case where video acceleration with DXVA or LAV CUVID is supported by the decoder but not the renderer (previously playback would fail in this case).
5. Changed: All files & folders are now copied from Blu-ray discs during a rip, rather than just the BDMV files.
6. Changed: If a Blu-ray reader isn't available on the system, an informative error message is now displayed when a rip is attempted.
7. Changed: Internal change on how television time-shifting player graph is created.
8. Changed: Some experimental code and additional logging for DVB-T television channel scanning.

16.0.173 (9/9/2011)

1. Fixed: MadVR wasn't always getting loaded in Red October mode.

16.0.172 (9/9/2011)

1. Changed: File locations dialog now has separate entries for "Other Video", "Ripped BD Video", and "Ripped DVD Video".
2. Fixed: Disc was not ejecting following a DVD or BD rip, even though option was selected.
3. Changed: In the rip action window, pressing the ENTER key after typing a name for a DVD/BD disc will commence the ripping process.
4. Changed: When ripping DVD/BD discs, if the rip destination folder already contains files, the user is prompted on whether it's ok to overwrite them prior to starting the rip.

16.0.171 (9/8/2011)

2. NEW: Blu-ray disc ripping.  Same requirements as for disc playback: must have ANYDVD HD or other Blu-ray reader software installed.
3. Changed: Media subtype of "Movie" is automatically set on all DVD/BD rips.
4. Fixed: When DVD and BD discs were swapped in and out of the drive several times, a Media Center crash could occur.
5. Changed: Nicer view header info when viewing BD & DVD discs.
6. Changed: DVD/BD rips bring up "Get Movie Info" dialog after clicking the Rip button if no meta-data has been entered for the movie.
7. Changed: When the media insertion dialog pops up for a DVD/BD and "Rip" is chosen, the rip action window appears allowing the user to modify the movie name rather than having the rip start up immediately.

16.0.170 (9/2/2011)

1. Fixed: Some WMV videos (for example the Windows 7 sample video Wildlife.wmv) wouldn't play on Android.
2. Changed: Red October will use EVR as the default renderer when it is available on XP (instead of VMR 9).
3. Changed: Software deinterlacing is disabled when using EVR in favor of the hardware-based deinterlacing that EVR provides.
4. Changed: The choice to rip a dvd as well as play the dvd is now presented when a DVD disc is inserted in the drive.

16.0.169 (9/1/2011)

1. Fixed: Movies weren't showing up under genre categories for Netflix in Theater View (Netflix had changed their genres).
2. Fixed: Closing the Smartlist editor while a drop box was open showing its content could lead to a crash.
3. Fixed: Rotten Tomatoes JSON parsing could hang when it encountered escaped quotation marks.
4. Fixed: DVD bookmark loading wasn't working in some cases.
5. Fixed: List style customization could present the wrong choices when using tree navigation of library views.
6. Fixed: Netflix TV series not adding to instant queue when requested (still have to restart MC before seeing them in the queue).

This bug is not specific to this version, I have observed it regularly since I started using media center:
When I copy music files to my ipod (2nd gen nano) some of them appear as podcasts on the device - meaning, among other annoying things, that I can only play one file at a time. (This doesn't happen when I use itunes.)

Probably not a brand new bug (recently upgraded to MC 16), but:
In Panes (artist, album) view, I used to be able to select an artist, right-click an album, select play, and that album would play.  Now, right-clicking an album and selecting play will play the artist's entire catalog.

You need to select the album first—so only the only tracks to be played are in the list. So left-click then right-click-Play. Or just double-click (if your double-click behaviour is set to replace PN).

I am going to post this here as it did not occur with earlier releases.

I have a Ceton card so I spend significant amounts of time in WMC. Several times now when I exit WMC from WMC Live TV and then start MC 16 from the Desktop and go to Theater View there is no audio in MC. The only thing that will fix it is a restart. It does not happen every time but more than half the time. If I don't restart but exit MC and go back to WMC audio is fine but it wil not work in MC without the restart.

This is only began with 16.0.179. Or at least that is when I noticed it first. I do not intall other software on this PC. Intel main board, i3 530, Nvidia GTS450. No software changes other than the routine windows update patches and miscrosoft security essentials definitions.

Installed App
MC 16
PowerDVD 10
Utilities for the Ceton tuner, which no longer hosted on this PC.

Hope that this gets fixed sometime soon, it is simply ANNOYING

Rick.ca: thanks, though I had figured that out on my own.  I sort of understand the logic behind this behavior ("play" will play whatever is in the list), but I prefer the previous behavior (since right-clicking is a context menu, I'd like "play" to take into account the context of where I right-clicked).  Also, it's an extra click that it will take me a while to learn (right-clicking the album has been ingrained by years of previous MC usage).

MC hangs on "Remove from Media Library and send to the Recycle Bin"
« Reply #12 on: October 11, 2011, 05:38:30 pm »

Using MC 16.0.179 to manage a JPG PHOTO library of 38,280 files, 39.7GB on 2TB drive. Running Windows 6/Vista.

When attempting to delete selected image files with "Remove from Media Library and send to the Recycle Bin" MC hangs, and Vista reports it is unresponsive. The deletion action triggers MC to display "Updating database" -- endlessly. MC must be forced closed. This is repeatable across dozens of experiments.

If instead I choose "Remove from Media Library and permanently delete from disk", I don't (so far) have a problem. MC does not display "Updating database" and does not hang.

"Remove from Media Library and send to the Recycle Bin" actually works: The files get moved to Recycle Bin. But then MC hangs. Perhaps MC is waiting for an expected Windows system confirmation that never arrives?

I can't find any problem with Recycle Bin. I can manually open it, explore Recycle Bin files (seeing the MC files I just deleted), and empty it. (If there was Recycle Bin corruption, I hoped opening and especially emptying would repair it, but I have no evidence it has a problem.)

More clues:

After starting MC, processes JRWeb.exe and Media Center 16.exe become very busy doing file I/O -- continually reading and writing bytes (this seen in Task Manager). This happens simply by starting MC, not doing anything at all. JRService.exe shows no activity. (I imagine this is all normal, but I'm curious, what are they doing on MC start?)

Once I select a file to delete, then "Remove from Media Library and send to the Recycle Bin" -- I'd EXPECT to MC doing some I/O -- but instead MC processes immediately STOP and remain stopped. This demonstrates that MC hangs, but which happens first: MC hangs in some other way so these processes stop, OR these processes stop therefore MC hangs?

There's no evident problem doing anything else in MC. I can import, tag, rename, delete permanently, etc, etc. The problem seems limited to MC using Recycle Bin.

Trying to rule out the usual suspects: No security/virus process. No evident hard drive problem (passes CHKDSK and other tests). No computer memory problem (passes all types of tests). No problem with any other program. In general, no problems with MC, except this one painful situation.

Suggestions?

More on MC hanging when deleting with option "Remove from Media Library and send to the Recycle Bin":

I installed a new drive (bought yesterday), put the MC data files on it, then tried again -- SAME HANG.

MC hangs when deleting via Recycle Bin, but does not hang when deleting Permanently.

Still looking for clues -- When using Recycle Bin to delete a file, what does MC do/need/wait for that could cause it to hang?

While I'm trying not to call it an MC bug (just a really annoying situation) it IS the only program I know of that has this problem on this PC. So more info about MC's deletion process would be really helpful. I can delete to recycle bin via a variety of other programs and it always works as expected. One difference with MC is its library database, which obviously needs updating when a file is deleted. BUT, the database needs updating whether deletion is to Recycle Bin or permanent, so why does MC hang?

@MusicHawk

I haven't been able to reproduce this.

Where in the program are you when you recycle the files?  In Standard View, at an image thumbnail library view?

Can anyone else test recycling files and report their results?

Thanks.

@Matt

HUGE CLUE: Normally I'm working in Calendar view of Thumbnails. I just switched the view to Details, then tried to delete to Recycle Bin -- It worked.

So, the problem might be isolated to MC hanging while deleting a Thumbnail when the main image file is Deleted to Recycle Bin. (Could the hang happen because the Thumbnail/Preview file is still "open" when MC tries to delete it?)

Note that in my Details view, every row shows a tiny thumbnail, yet this doesn't seem to cause the hang problem.

To further test, I cloned the library (same media files, but different library files and thumbnail files). The same problem exists, but also the same workaround. Delete to Recycle Bin hangs in Thumbnail view, but (so far) works in Details view.

Note that my MC photo library uses two drives. Drive C has MC itself, and the library data and thumbnail files in the default locations. Drive M has the library content (an arrangement I've been using with MC for years). Is it possible that MC is confused about where to find (and therefore delete) the thumbnail files?

Does it happen if you recycle a single file?

What combination of clicks and keyboard buttons are you pushing to recycle?

Thanks.

@Matt

An odd incident, but the problem persists...

My MC computer was sitting on "Updating database" for almost an hour (while I worked on my laptop). Vista reported MC was unresponsive, so finally I forced it closed. I restarted MC to do more testing for you. In Calendar View Details, I was able to delete to Recycle without problem, as earlier. I was then going to switch the view to Thumbnails to test that, but when I selected Thumbnails in the pulldown, suddenly MC crashed. I restarted MC, tried again to delete to Recycle from Thumbnails view, and it WORKED.

BUT -- Then it went back to failing. I left for a meeting, MC open, having just succeeded in deleting. But five hours later I tried again, selecting another image in Thumbnails view, deleting -- MC immediately displayed "Updating database" and became unresponsive. Closing, restarting, trying again, back to the familiar behavior. I can delete to Recycle from Details view but get a hang deleting in Thumbnails view.

NOTE that the deleted images do get moved to Recycle Bin, so whatever causes MC to hang happens after this action.

Perhaps something about MC's state just after it crashed "cured" the problem, but only for one deletion. Then back to MC hanging.

Answering your questions, I normally select one or several files, press Shift-Delete to go directly to Recycle Bin, then press Enter.

A suggestion... I wish MC could have a check/rebuild/repair option to allow a user to manually verify database integrity and/or force rebuilding (as is typically available in classic database systems). It might delete all temp files, recreate indexes, rewrite .jmd files, etc. (After a user prompt warning it might take a long time...) I know some of this can be triggered by other actions, but only by guessing what does what. There's no one-click "Check and Repair Everything" that I know of. Could it be a useful tool in MC?

The old problem/bug persists in the version 179 too:

Theater View on a client tablet computer shows sometimes the wrong (old) data on the 'Info' and 'List' panels, 'Playing Now' is always correct

It's very annoying...
