New, Faster Server (and thanks to Bob)
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:39:00 pm »

JRiver recently moved and upgraded its main server.  This means a faster Interact, webpages, YADB lookups, Pix01, and more.

We used to have a room full of different server machines here in Minneapolis.

Then a few years ago we switched to running most of the servers on a single machine using VMWare.  At that time we moved the main machine to Arizona and ran it at En.gen, JRiver's hardware/server division.

Over the last two weeks, we've been moving servers back to Minneapolis where we have a faster connection and a new fast machine.

But despite moving every server and switching IP addresses, you probably didn't notice much down time.  For this, a big thank-you to Bob.  Bob is JRiver's employee #3 who started in 1983.  He's a hardware genius.

Enjoy :)

I'll take 2 SCO OpenServer 6.0.0 Enterprise Licenses, please.

I want to add my very big thank you to Matt's message.  Bob, you did a great job of keeping us up and running while so much was going on.  I think it's amazing.

This list of our servers is a little out of date now, but it will give you an idea what goes on behind the scenes.

There are more than a million transactions a day that happen on JRiver's servers.  If any one of these fails, somebody has a bad experience.

Here's a picture of Bob:

Happy Thanksgiving.

The SCO box is right under the RS6000, happy days :)
The new server is the thin one with the multiple bays in the black cabinet in the upper half.

Here's a six year old post about our beloved RS6000.  At that time, it had been running for 5.5 years without a reboot.

And no one has mentioned the old IBM PC sitting in the very lower left including a state-of-art floppy drive?

I'm sorry, but JohnT deserves some of the credit.  He managed the transition of our servers that provide back end digital delivery services for the MediaNet service used by LaCuracao and Synacor.  This included many of the U.S. cable companies.  Apparently none of them noticed the change.  That's good.

Thanks, John!

WOW !!!

It looks like the type of PC I remember being featured in the Charlie Chaplin commercials...   I don't recall RS6000's ever looking like that.  Anyway, non-disruptive change is always a challenge and obviously the JRiver crew pulled it off.  Congrats!
