Whole home Audio help...
« on: January 23, 2014, 10:41:49 am »

I have been using JRiver in conjunction with a Russound CAV6 system and a 3rd party app developed by an AVS Forum member.  It has been useful to my needs since 2007.  However now that my kids are older and adding more and more content to the PC, the Russound keypads are not useful in finding media, and the kids want the video capabilities too.

What I am wondering is if I can remove the Russound system and add a 12 channel amp to get what they want?  What I envision doing is removing the Russound keypads from the walls and replacing them with touchscreen tablet (Android or Windows 8 -- which would be better choice).  IF I can do this, is there also a way to power those tablets via the Cat5 wire that is already there from the Russound keypads?

While I have utilized JRiver for 7 years, I am nowhere near an experienced user.  I relied too heavily on the Russound portion, so am limited in my depth of knowledge regarding JRiver, Gizmo, and how I might obtain an elegant whole house interface for audio and video that my wife and kids can easily and readily use.

Thank you,
Randy

Thank you.  That was useful -- get the idea you found only moderate success.  Bummer.

Nope - very successful for Videos and Music.  Mounting looks great and the wireless charging system works perfectly.  The only "feature" I've not got yet is the Intercom part.  Skype is not very good for this but one day....

Guess I had better re-read that thread, as I obviously missed the point the first time through.   :-[

Hey Nath, have you checked out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgMTPa1FKto for your intercom. Don't know if it does exactly what you want, but thought it looked pretty functional...

Owwww looks good and in a quick test works well - few things are missing to make it work for me, so I've emailed the dev with this:

Quote
Hi,
I’ve been looking for a good Intercom app to replace a traditional home intercom and WAVE looks existing but there are some features I would need:
-   Ability to turn off the Video (eg Audio Only)
-   Ability to enable “Auto Answer”
-   Ability to page All contacts at once

For example, this would enable me to “Page” the kids and say “dinner is ready”

Also do you plan to have a “Paid” version without adds?

Thanks for your consideration
Nathan

The devs have got back to me and seem keen to expand features so "fingers crossed"  - thanks for the link, how did you find them?

I'd like to (eventually) do what you've done, so I was just looking around for a better solution than skype. My initial thoughts were around asterisk / pbx extensions using SIP, but unless you already have the asterisk pbx it wasn't going to fly. I do have one, but this is probably still a simpler solution. Glad it's prmoising for you :-D

This is the list of stuff I sent to the devs (who seem predisposed to at least consider it).
- Needs to work when the screen is off (eg unit in standby)
- Load on startup
- Page All button

+ Some suggestions on the GUI

Works pretty well otherwise (but the first two are a current show stopper).
