DTS audio files stopped working
« on: July 25, 2014, 11:48:17 pm »

Hi folks!

Ran into a weird one I can't solve...  I run two PCs with Media Center - both were running 19.0.146.  For whatever reason, sometime in the last few weeks, DTS audio files stopped working on my primary HTPC (both 48/24 and 96/24).  I've tried upgrading to 19.0.156, and even did a complete uninstall/reinstall and tried with and without the Arcsoft dts decoder in place.  Still no dice.  PC is an Intel i7 running Windows 7 x64.  Sound Card is an Asus Essence ST.  Other than possibly Windows updates, NOTHING changed on the PC.  The error popup I get reads as follows:
Something went wrong with Playback Details: Failed to play x.dts.  The file does not contain any audio.  However, dts files still play fine on my other PC running 19.0.146.  Any ideas what's up?

Thanks a bunch!

Use your mouse to hover over a file and see its location.  See if you can find the file there.  Is it the right size?

Thanks for the response!  The files are definitely still there & have a proper looking size.  These are files that have been in my library awhile.  In poking around it sounds like dts audio files are decoded by the lav filters.  After the reinstall the lav folder in %appdata% was empty - should it have been?  I copied the files out of my other PC's lav folder & that didn't help.  Do I need to register any of those files?

Under MC's options for File Types, check the settings for DTS.

MC uses the LAV filters in AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 19\Plugins\lav

File association is Yes and Playback is set to Automatic.  I did another uninstall/reinstall and the lav folder is empty - should it be populated as part of the install, or do I need to manually install the filters?  If so, where do I get them?  Thanks!

It should be auto-populated the first time you try to use something that needs it. It'll need an internet connection to download it.

Got it - I needed to register the .ax files in the lav folder.  That PC is in my living room and has a so-so wireless connection, so I'm guessing it was probably timing out and throwing the error before it finished the downloads.  Anyway, good to go now - thanks!
