5.6 MHz DSD stutter

Hi All,

I have an issue on my jriver running on windows 8.1 .
After about 30 secs of play the music is stuttering.

The PC is dedicated music source and is streaming music through my NAS to my DAC via usb.

The lower bit rate DSD play fine, its only the 5.6 MHz.

The pre-buffering on jriver is set to 10 ms, and the buffering for audio is set to 500 ms.

Any help ?

What if you set pre-buffering to 20 seconds?

If it happens every 30 seconds or so, check that you don't have Memory Playback enabled.
 
Edit: The CPU and I/O spikes with DSD128 happen every 75 seconds or so for me, not every 30. Perhaps it is more frequent on a slower system however.

20 secs pre buffering sets it into constant buffering issues.

If this DSD stream you're playing is also multi-channel (5.1 or so) and DST compressed (from a SACD perhaps?), it can have quite strong CPU requirements. How fast is your system?

Its a 2 channel album, don't thing its compressed.
The machine is with Motherboard ASRock Q1900B, 4 GB RAM and OS and JRiver running on 64 GB SSD.

Hm, the J1900 CPU on that board isn't very fast, I can't really judge if its fast enough for DSD128. How much JRMark do you get? (Help -> Benchmark)

I haven't tried the benchmark, will check tonight and post.

As for the J1900, it was the only motherboard I could used for a fanless setup.

A JRmark score of 2000+ is recommended for stereo DSD64 (2.8MHz) playback.
That system is under-specced for 5.6MHz or Multichannel DSD playback.
 
You may be able to get away with bitstreaming on some hardware as long as the track is not DST-compressed (5.6MHz DSD should not be, while 2.8MHz DSD can be) but I'd recommend offline conversion to a PCM format (e.g. 176kHz FLAC/ALAC) if your system can't handle native DSD playback.

Thanks for the feedback, 2.4 plays fine its only the 5.4.
Does it mean its my motherboard or my cpu thats the problem ?

I was under the impression its my lan or the NIC interface on the computer.

I can play 5.6 DSD on a Netbook with an atom processor without any stuttering. The files are on a usb connected drive, not a NAS. As a test, I would suggest you try putting some of the files on the internal drive and see how that works. If that works, try a usb drive if possible. My guess is that the problem may be the NAS connection rather than the CPU itself. I tried a NAS setup with my Netbook and never could get consistent playback of high rez files. I have pre-buffering set at 2 seconds. You might try that. For high rez, I also put 3 seconds of silence at the end of each track and 2 seconds of silence at the beginning of each track to help with pre-loading. The system is bitstreaming to a usb DSD capable DAC. JMark - Math 278, Image 465, Database 687, Overall 477. Now that is one slow machine. It is running Windows 7 Starter with no anti-virus and no network activity when playing music, except a JRiver client used as a remote control. The testing I suggest may give more information about what is causing the problem.

That'll be the difference between bitstreaming and not, then.
Only DST-compressed DSD still requires a decent amount of CPU power to bitstream, since the DST compression must still be removed.
 
I agree though, test by copying some files over to a local drive rather than the network.

I copied some 5.6 Mhz files on the local SSD and they played as they should.

So seems like its the network ?

Don't think it will be the interface, I feel its the 100 Mbps powerline adapter.
