How to make JRiver scale only 4:3 videos.
« on: March 20, 2015, 09:03:21 pm »

Hi, I've played around in the settings, and I am unable to make JRiver only scale 4:3 videos. I set aspect ratio correction from 4:3 to 16:9, and set the mode to stretch. However when this is set, all videos are scaled even those with movie aspect ratios, which look quite weird.

Is this a bug, or is there something I'm not doing correctly to set it so only 4:3 videos are scaled, and other aspect ratios are ignored. I tried changing aspect mode correction from stretch to auto, but when I do this 4:3 videos are no longer scaled to 16:9.

If this has been asked before sorry, I found the search feature confusing, and I could not see any similar posts in the first few pages.

Your help will be appreciated.

I have had the same issue for years. There is no perfect solution.
If you leave it at "no change" so Movies are in the format intended, older tv shows in the 4:3 format have big side black bars.
If you set it to "stretch", the 4:3 tv looks fine (but stretched, but I am used to it.). A movie not full frame, like a 2.35:1 will be stretched vertically and all folks will be really tall. I don't see any trigger to tell MC to stretch or not, just on or off.
So we leave it at stretch (as we watch more tv than movies), and if we start a movie we use the arrow keys to chose "aspect|no change".
Inconvenient, but we have done it so long I consider that "how it works" and not a bug :)

There is a tag for "dimensions", perhaps a rule could be made so anything that doesn't have a TV fitting Ratio, gets stretched if needed, or not.
I have been playing with zones, maybe a Zone for one and the other?

I will play with it myself, I make progress I will report back.

Good Luck
Don

The "aspect ratio correction" option is for displays which use non-standard pixel arrangements (e.g. plasmas which are 16:9 but have a 1024x768 panel resolution) or anamorphic projector setups.

What is probably the issue here is that your "4:3" video is actually a 16:9 video that has black bars encoded in it.
Actual 4:3 videos scale just fine if I set the "aspect ratio mode" to Stretch.

And there is no way for MC to automatically detect that a video is 16:9 with pillarboxing.
But I do wish that MC offered independent H/V scaling options like every other player out there, so that you could at least fix it manually, and that the scaling options offered more granular control rather than the huge 1% steps it uses right now.

Some sort of masking functionality to eliminate images that some videos have inside the pillarboxing when it's 4:3 video in a 16:9 frame would be nice as well. (or it could be handled by independent H/V scaling too, if that cropped the edges of the video)

no my video is pure 4:3. I tried not setting 4:3 to 16:9 and setting auto, and now it squashes the 4:3 video and makes the aspect ratio even narrower.  Weird.

Anyway is there a key shortcut I can use to change it whilst watching?

Tools → Options → Video → Advanced:
Set aspect ratio correction to: No correction
Set aspect ratio mode to: Stretch

(I assume you're trying to fill the screen with 4:3 content?)

On your standard keyboard you use the left and right arrows to jump ahead and back.
You use the up and down arrows to chose from many options like Subtitles and ASPECT.
I up arrow twice, that shows Options for the picture (with Aspect as the first choice). Highlight the aspect menu item and hit enter.
You will have many choices. Chose no change for non 4:3 videos, Stretch for anything that doesn't fill the screen the way you want.
