Few Comments on trying to watch TV vs Sage
« on: April 10, 2015, 07:03:15 pm »

-Aspect Ratio stays 4x3 for about 4-5 seconds on channel change before going wide screen.
-Clicking Guide from MCE Remote is slow (4-5 seconds)
-changing channels is slow
-Rewinding, going forward is just too slow compared to Sage especially while watching sports
-trying to enter my recordings and subsriptions will lead to crash every once in a while
-when hitting watch from within JRiver it will go straight to full screen mode. Should keep playing in JRiver just like everything else. Looked for a config for this and couldn't find one
-when hitting guide it should stay on current playing channel.
-A MUST: Ability to set more than one folder or hard drive for recordings
-Red October for sound playback with Colossus vs the JRiver Engine in non time-shifting mode.
-A MUST: Allow to prioritize or choose specific cards for specific channels.  Option is there but not working for me. (Not all ATSC cards are made equal)
-Comskip (Haven't tried the new change in 20.0.93 for playback) Would be nice to have it run alongside with JRiver.
-While in the guide, unable to select the option on top of the guide with the MCE remote. Need to use the mouse.
-Image just disappeared...small image in a corner after going back to a recording..All right Back to Sage I can't use this and want to watch the game...

On a positive note:
***I love the image quality!! Looks better than Sage on my 70" TV...And believe me I've tried lots of different configs for Video in Sage over the years... (AMD Video Decoder, ffmpeg, Microsoft, Native Sage Decoder etc...) Still looks better...

It's just like the sound in JRiver...It's just good!!!

Seeking is tough in a high-quality rendering mode.  This probably won't improve substantially.  I'd recommend you reconfigure your remote to use the 30-second skip ahead/10-second skip back modes instead (which is much more convenient for skipping commercials anyway).

Then seeking is lightning quick in MC.

-when hitting watch from within JRiver it will go straight to full screen mode. Should keep playing in JRiver just like everything else. Looked for a config for this and couldn't find one

This should (but I'd have to test it) obey this setting:
Tools > Options > General > Behavior > Jump on play (video)

It defaults to Fullscreen, but you can change it to whatever mode you want.  Theater View has its own version of this setting at:
Tools > Options > Theater View > Behavior > Jump on play (video)

I embedded my comments in red, for speed.

Note that I am only using a Quad DVB-T tuner card, so don't have your complexity of ATSC, STB, Colossus, etc.

-Aspect Ratio stays 4x3 for about 4-5 seconds on channel change before going wide screen.
I don't see this at all. Probably related to your sources. Possibly could be improved, but probably requires time for MC to analyse what the incoming signal is, and correctly display it. Could also be related to settings. I actually get still images of the previous and new channels until the audio and video sync up, so what you are seeing may be your version of what I am seeing, which is different for different hardware and sources.

-Clicking Guide from MCE Remote is slow (4-5 seconds)
Response for me is near immediate. Certainly less than a quarter of a second. This could be a difference in our hardware. Perhaps you could put a listing of your environment in your forum signature, as I have. That would help with many questions, not just this one.

-changing channels is slow
Changing channels isn't instantaneous for me either. In fact, it can take four to six seconds whether selecting a channel from the Guide, or switching from one playing channel to another. I haven't tested this using other software with the same tuner card, but I think it does have a lot to do with the tuner card I am using. If Sage is better for you though, then I guess MC should do better also.

-Rewinding, going forward is just too slow compared to Sage especially while watching sports
Pressing the Rewind or Fast Forward once will progress through the video at 5x the normal speed. Press again, 20x. Press again 100x. Pressing the opposite button to the one you pressed returns playback to normal speed. Do you want more than 100x?

The Fast Forward and Rewind functions aren't smooth, and there is no sound like some DVRs and PVRs, but it does work. I would like better though. Watching news at 2x with sound used to be a good time saver for me.  ;D

-trying to enter my recordings and subsriptions will lead to crash every once in a while
As I said elsewhere, I have never had that happen, as far as I can remember.

-when hitting watch from within JRiver it will go straight to full screen mode. Should keep playing in JRiver just like everything else. Looked for a config for this and couldn't find one
Try the options in Theatre View -> Jump on play (video). Try "None". I'm not sure that will do what you want, but I'm not sure exactly what you mean or expect on this one. Some screen shots of what you mean may help. Also, have you investigated detaching the Display window in Standard View, or using the Ctrl-6 shortcut?

-when hitting guide it should stay on current playing channel.
Yep. There has been much discussion on how the Guide button should work. Have a search around as Yaobing explained all the options at one stage. I forget the details, but I think changes were planned.

-A MUST: Ability to set more than one folder or hard drive for recordings
:D We've done that one to death.

-Red October for sound playback with Colossus vs the JRiver Engine in non time-shifting mode.
Being looked at by Yaobing right now I believe.

-A MUST: Allow to prioritize or choose specific cards for specific channels.  Option is there but not working for me. (Not all ATSC cards are made equal)
Also being looked at by Yaobing right now. Great support and response from JRiver, huh?  :D

-Comskip (Haven't tried the new change in 20.0.93 for playback) Would be nice to have it run alongside with JRiver.
Something I must try to set up as well. I might let Astromo have a go first though. Let him do all the hard work for Australian conditions. But it does work now, just not with all the functionality everyone would like.

That's why we all picked JRiver. Well, one of the reasons: Great sound and video quality. Enjoy!

Overall I would ask; Is Sage actually better in all these areas?

-when hitting guide it should stay on current playing channel.

When I hit guide it goes to the guide and keeps playing the existing station in the bottom right corner.

There is a setting in Tools > Options that is something along the lines of "When exiting full screen mode, pause playback". Make sure it's turned off.

I read that as meaning that he wanted the highlighted channel in the Guide to be the channel that was/is playing.

I'm pretty sure at present the Guide is displayed with the first channel in the list highlighted, which means that you have to scroll down to the channel you were up to again.

I think the behaviour is different depending on whether you. Yep, this is how it works;

If you go into the Guide, scroll down to a channel you want to watch, press OK to get to the menu, press Watch to play, then:

Press the Guide button while playing a TV Channel live. -> Goes back to the Guide and the highlight is positioned at the top of the list of channels. If the option mentioned is not ticked, the channel keeps playing in a small windows at the bottom right.

Stop playback while watching a TV Channel live.           -> Goes back to the Guide and the highlight is positioned at the channel you were just watching.

Press the "Back" button to go back to the Guide.          -> Goes back to the Guide and the highlight is positioned at the channel you were just watching. If the option mentioned is not ticked, the channel keeps playing in a small windows at the bottom right.

The option in question is in Tools -> Options -> Theater View -> Pause video playback when entering Theater View

Thank you folks for all the feedback. It's good to know I am being listened to and it proves you're working hard on the TV aspect... As I am also working hard and spending a lot of time on this trying to help with a user's point of view. WOuldn't want this to go to waste and it obviously isn't.. ;)

(a lot more time than I should...My wife is getting upset... ;D)

I will try these suggestions and report back.  My PC is not blazing fast but it's a decent machine (AMD A8 with dedicated graphics card) I will post my details later on as suggested also. I wonder if my RO settings could be tweaked a bit for faster speeds..One thing is for sure Sage is really fast and performs (almost...) flawlessly...

If your machine isn't fast enough, use Red October Standard, not HQ.

ROS is what I'm using. I have a dedicated Radeon HD6670, which is not super fast but definitely good enough for TV/Video watching.
