Author Topic: Files paths & how to avoid duplicate versions in library? Id, NAS and PC  (Read 2789 times)

In a set-up where I have files on NAS, use Id for the main library, manage & maintain that library 'remotely' on my PC and sync my iPad from my PC, I run into various versions of what looks like the same problem: paths to the files.

Problem 1 - trying to maintain the Id's library via PC:
  • On Id, the library points to a path '/mnt/...'
  • On my PC, when playing from the Id library, MC doubles the entries: it adds a new version of each file, but with the path '\\192.168...'.  I can delete these duplicate entries easily (select by file location on disc), but it sort of defeats the purpose.

I use this combination hardware (PC) and library (Id) also to syncronize my iPod: and it sees the files as duplicates.
On the positive side, when I close the Id library on my PC (change to a different one) and re-open it, the duplicate entries are gone (though quickly re-built).

Problem 2 - http in files' path name vs. drive letter in the name
  • I have a local library on my PC that points to the files on the NAS. The path name includes the IP address (\\192.168...)
  • In Options > File Locations, I try to point to that path name, however it gets replaced with the drive lette (Z:\...).
As a result, when I rip cds or enter art work, the path includes the drive letter, and I have to use 'rename files' to correct that.

Is this both the expected behaviour, caused by different operating systems, and I have to deal with it?

  • Where did I put my teeth?

If you set your auto import options, you can tell MC which locations to import or which to exclude.

Yes, but how does that address my problem? It's three different paths to the same file.

Ps- thought you announced being off this weekend! Already running out off the mentioned refreshments ?  ;)

Exclude one or more.  You can do that when you edit a location in the autoimport settings.

I still have a few beers left, thanks.

Maybe I am not describing this clear.

Auto import on the Id works fine. Points to '/mnt…'

I then open Id's library on my PC.
The auto import would still point to the same path - since it is the same library. However, '/mnt' is interpreted as '192.168..', thus doubles all entries.

Auto import also doesn't help me with second problem: drive letter vs. ip address. Unless you are saying that MC doesn't support IP address in the options > file location menu?

cheers!

Anyone having some insights to this? I acknowledge it was a long weekend when I posted and most might have been offline :)

You can't use a Library directly on different platforms simultaneously, because the file path standards are different. You can certainly open a Library served by a different platform, but opening it directly won't work, as you've illustrated.

With a little elbow grease, you might be able to use a Linux Library on OSX, and vice versa, but not Windows.

Thanks Glynor. I think what you mean is the option 'playing from' should work, right? Adding a library there with the access key.
That's what I do, and that's where I run into these problems.
