Unable to create View
« on: November 25, 2003, 12:48:06 pm »

Friends, up front, I agree, this is a very silly newbe question, but somewhere along the below lines I might be doing something wrong, but donot know what.

I simply want to create a view on 'Composer'.
Okay:
- RMB om 'Media Library'
- 'Add View Scheme'
- Select: Custom
- Image: Audio
- Files: Add Rule, Advanced, select Composer
- in the next box: Select all + ok + again ok

However, I cannot expand this new view... I have another view 'Artists' where I can click the expand-button [ + ], but I don't such a button after having created a view as per above.

WhatamIdoingwrong?

Thanks in advance.

Check the box (under edit view) for "populate".

Have you filled in any of the composers?

Are you talking about the view in the tree?

Yes, I selected all Composers

Okay:
- RMB om 'Media Library'
- 'Add View Scheme'
- Select: Custom
- Image: Audio
- Populate tree
- Files: Add Rule, Advanced, select Composer
- in the next box: Select all (all composers ares listed in that box)
then ok + again ok

So I have:
Name (untagged) in the box: Composers
Image: audio
Behaviour: automatic/tagged both other options (populate tree and
Honor parent scheme...
Files: all the composers are listed there..

Edit the view scheme again.  Click the arrow next to the files box and 'Copy'.  Paste the results in here.

Try it without the search.  Add composer as one of the visible panes on the right.

The details you enter in the 'Files' box under edit view scheme are just used to narrow down the search i.e. the files that are included.  I suspect you want to include all files, in which case, like Matt said, you don't need any data in there.  If, however you want to exclude any files that do not have a composer name tagged then you shoudl select Composer, Tick Empty and change the box at the bottom to Exclude.

When you've done this i.e. hit Ok in edit View Scheme, you need to specify how you want to browse the view e.g. by composer or by composer then by year etc.  That's what the panes are for that Matt was referring to.  Select your new view scheme and look in the main body of the screen above the files where it says 'Empty (Click here to configure)'.

Click there and add a pane for composer.  Then add further panes as desiered to allow you to narrow your selection down further if required.  You can also move columns left or right so you get the heirarchy right.

Given that you have a long list of composers one thing you might like to do is add 2 columns for composer, then click the column header for the left-most one and select Column poperties to set a grouping (Try 3 to start with).

Once you've done this you may find that it's easier using the panes (to select composer) than using the tree.  If so go back to edit view scheme and untick the 'Populate tree option'.

Thanks you both for your input.
I have on the left

[ - ] Media Library
       [ - ] Audio
            [ - ] Artist
                  [ + ] Name of artist
                  [ + ] Name of artist
etc.

I simply want the same but then for composer

[ - ] Media Library
       [ - ] Audio
            [ + ] Artist
            [ - ] Composer
                  [ + ] Name of composer
                  [ + ] Name of composer

I know of creating a view only using
 RMB om 'Media Library'
- 'Add View Scheme'
- Select: Custom
- Image: Audio
- Populate tree
- Files: Add Rule, Advanced, select Composer
- in the next box: Select all (all composers ares listed in that box)
then ok + again ok

Way back in the good old times with 9.0 I did have such a view.
Great, but after installing upgrades the view was gone and much to
my regret I can't create new views the way I did (as above).

Pls, maybe there are much better ways to create views, but I know this
one..

What am I doing wrong when I follow above steps.

Again, a view is created, but remain empty. ..

Thank you for your patience!

brgds/Marcel.

I agree that creating views is very confusing, and the documentation isn't much help.  The easiest way I know of to create the view you want is:

Right-click "Audio", select "Add View Scheme | Audio | Empty".

Now you have a boring view that shows all audio.

In the top pane where it says click to configure, right-click, select "Add Column | Advanced | Composer".  Now all your composers are in a list in the top pane, although that's not too interesting.

Finally, back in the tree on your left, right-click on your new view scheme (hopefully now magically renamed "Composer"), select "Edit View Scheme" and turn on the "Populate Tree" checkbox.

If you want even more hierarchy, you can repeat the "Add Column" step.  For example "Add Column | Album".  Now your view scheme is called "Composer/Album" (assuming you left the "auto-name" checkbox on), and under each composer there's another level showing the albums for that composer.

I would do it this way:

1. RMB on Media Library
2. Add View Scheme
3. Custom
4. Image
5. Populate Tree
6. Filter: MediaType=Audio (NOT MORE!)
7. Go to the view
8. Add a Column "Artist"
9. Voila

Yes - it took me quite some time to figure this out, but it is a killer-feature, trust me.

He wants composer not artist.  Otherwise that's pretty much what I said above, only I tried to qualify it with an explanation.  Maybe my English isn't very good? Maybe I don't explain things very well? Maybe this thread is making me lose the will to live! :(

JLee,
Thanks. You did explain it correctly, but I cud not figure out what you meant.
This is because the part "'Empty (Click here to configure)' was closed, i.e. I did not realize it was there, simply because I never used it.
Why not? Because the composer-view worked allright sofar, until upgrading 9.0 to 9.1x
In a clear moment I noticed it. Thank you for the solution.

However..
Don't get me wrong, but still I feel an Explorer tree-like view as shown with 'Artists', the best way.
The Artist-tree get's me a quick overview of 48 artists-to see 49 and further I need to scroll down only.

Still my question remains: why is it that I cannot get the same thing for composers??
(or other elements, like Albums, for that matter).

Also when I use 'Edit' (from the menu-bar) , Add-view-Scheme, Custom,
nothing happens at all, i.e. nothing is created.

Am not sure, but it looks like this 'Add view scheme'- thing may not be working properly...

Wud you do me a favour and pls follow my idea of setting up a view scheme,
see earlier msgs.
What are you getting? Nothing, or indeed a tree, as it shd be??

Really anxious to know.

Thank you again.

Using Edit> Add view scheme from teh menu bar does indeed seem to be broken.  The vast majority of people will not have noticed as they tend to right click on media library.

As for following your instructions - like I said they are not correct.  The only way to add the items you need to the tree is to add columns using the panes.  After you've done this you can hide the panes by dragging the horizontal splitter bar upwards until it's no longer in view.  However I would urge you to use the panes rather than the tree before you dismiss the idea.  This was the main enhancement that 9.1 gave us over 9.0 and is a big improvement in my opinion.

Add your view scheme using the right click on media library.  DO NOT enter any rule (like all composers) when adding the view scheme.  Just go back and follow my earlier instructions to the letter.

Let me know how you get on.

Okay, thanks. As said, I indeed managed to create views in panes, like you
described. Different way of working, a matter of taste I suppose.
The way I described may be wrong in 9.1 but then again I wud say is not
working anymore/right and shd be forgotten.
However, it allows users to go through all kinds of menu's, select things, but
in the end does not give a result, leaving (at least me) puzzled as to why it
doesnot work, until someone like you is kind enough to say that panes shd
be used in future ... Guess I have to live with it.

Anyway, thanks again for your kind assistance.
