Disable 'Save folder structure' when burning
« on: February 17, 2004, 05:32:56 am »

I'd like to disable this 'Save folder structure' option when I burn a c.d.
I see the option, but I can't switch it off.
I use version 10.0.67

Is it a bug?
Is it me?

If you mean you don't want folders to be created on the CD, choose  "CD/DVD folder naming" on the options menu and select the "None" choice.

The "Save Folder structure" option is a way to save any customizations you do while organizing your data CD. For example, if you rename or create a bunch of folders and move files around between them, this option will save the setup to you can load it at a later date and create the same CD.

Hi John,

thanks for your reply, but I do have chosen that option.
And still it burns all these directories I don't need - I simply want to burn a file which should show up in the root of the CD.

Looks more like a bug to me, then.
Any other suggestions?

In the 'bug'-area JLee told me this:

==============================
Mark - This isn't a bug it just needs a little more explanation.  Rather than start a discussion here I think you should find your original thread and repost your question in there.
=================================

Because I start to think that I'm stupid I've rechecked the 'Help'-area in MC too.
It states:
==============
Creates sub-folders on Data CDs. The fly-out menu displays the View Schemes you have created under Media Library. (Note: To view all the files on the Data CD at once, enable "Display Files in subfolders” under Tools | Options | Device Settings
=================

But wherever I look in the options: there is no such thing in there.

So please: can somebody help me?

When you create a data CD with MC before you click burn you must tell MC what folder structure you want to use via (and I can't see MC at the moment so this may not be exact) Options> CD/DVD Folder naming in the burn window.  If you want to simply put all items in the root check out the options in there.

Next you need to decide what file naming convention to use.  Do this via the CD/DVD File naming option in the burn window.  This is particularly important if you want to have the files burned in the order in which they are listed in the burn queue.  Do this this you need to check the option under Custom to 'add the seq to beginning of filename'.

Once you've set the options for your preferred folder structure you can save yourself the hassle of having to remember how it's been set for next time by by using the Save folder structure option.  Then next time you burn a data CD just use load option to get MC to use these settings that you are so fond of.

JLee, I appreciate your answer highly, really I do.

The option you mean is probably: CD/DVD folder naming. I've set this option to 'none'. That should do the trick, isn't it? But I've had this option checked all the times I've been burning and still I get these directories burnt.
Only thing I can think of is the 'Custom' option in this CD/DVD folder naming: should I uncheck the option 'Use Assorted for....' too?

Hope you want to help me a bit further!

You could try that.  When you set the option you should see the new filename displayed in the burn queue list.  You might need to adjust the column width to see the full filename that MC intends to use.  Check that out and give me some examples of the filename MC is using.

Well, I tried two different things:

- the one thing I was talking about in the last posting
- set CD/DVD File Naming to 'Track name'

Both of them with the same result: the directories are burnt (burned?) too, instead of just the file.

It's driving me nuts! :'(

Post ALL the following details here:

1.  The option you have ticked in CD/DVD Folder naming and if it's 'custom' post the contents of the custom setting.

2.  The option you have ticked in CD/DVD File naming and if it's 'custom' post the contents of the custom setting.

3. For 1 file that is being burned with the wrong details provide the following:
 - The proposed filename and path reported by MC in the burn queue list.
 - The actual filename and path of this file on your hard drive
 - The artist, album, track# and name tags for this file in the MC library

Post ALL the following details here:

Happy to. Here we go:

1.  The option you have ticked in CD/DVD Folder naming and if it's 'custom' post the contents of the custom setting.
Custom with the 'Use 'assorted' for [artist] on multi-artists albums' checked OFF and the rule for naming folders on CD is set to artist/album

2.  The option you have ticked in CD/DVD File naming and if it's 'custom' post the contents of the custom setting.
Set to 'Track name'

3. For 1 file that is being burned with the wrong details provide the following:
 - The proposed filename and path reported by MC in the burn queue list.
The folder: Y:\temp (where Y:\ is my cd-writer) and the file: dit is een test.doc
 - The actual filename and path of this file on your hard drive
c:\temp\dit is een test.doc
 - The artist, album, track# and name tags for this file in the MC library
it's not a music file, but just a Word-document in this example.

Hope this helps some more. Thanks again

Thanks for the info Mark.  That makes it a lot easier to investigate.  Unless someone else jumps in with the answer I'll check it out when I get home tonight.

In the meantime my first thought is for point one above you should use 'none' rather than custom.  I know you used that before and it didn't work but it's definately the option you want for the folder.  For point 2 try custom and use a rule of [Filename] or [Filename (Name)].  Before using the latter check that this exists in MC as a keyword.

I take it all back Mark.  You have indeed found a bug.  I tried burning the file C:\Temp\test file.txt with Folder name set to 'none' and file name set to 'same as original'.  MC insisted on burning it to F:\temp\test file.txt (where F is my CDRW).

That's bug 1.  Bug 2 is that if I change the folder name settings MC sometimes loses the entry in the burn queue and I have to add the file back again.
