MC memory usage
« on: February 24, 2004, 06:02:41 pm »

Ive been having huge problems with the last few builds (after .72 only)on MC 10. Ive noticed the memory usage is often many times higher than it should be (this occurs when no unusual tasks are ebing peeformed).

Ive seen mem usages of up to 140mb. and its causing big slowdown problems

does anyone know why this could be.

I've seen high usage a few days ago.

I was re-importing everything (new HD) and it got to about 170MB and then after about 150,000 files it just slowed way down.  It was importing 1 file every second towards the end until I cancelled it.

Oh and I had 64,000,000 page faults! Every other program running at the time had a max of 1,000.

Try to isolate what you're doing.

Tagging, playing certain formats, watching certain visualizations, etc.

Let us know what you find.

currently im listening to wma (192kb). no visualisations. no 'other' mc work going on in the background and im using 68mb.

im trying to determine if its mc or any plusins, so i will disable them then take a look

ive been looking at which plugins shoot up the memory:

album view seems to use 20mb
auto equaliser = 3mb
playing now = 1

that doesnt make up the entire difference. will do some more investigating and let you know what i see

im stumped as to why this is happening. looking now MC is using 10% of the processor yet 131mb. the screen's minimized, no visualisations, no tasks running, just 1 song.

ive played with it for the last couple of days and i cant resolve it. ive now given up and ordered more RAM off crucial.com

I'm using build 10.0.80, library has about 28,000 VBR MP3s, currently analysing audio on 90 files and my memory usage is 37MB. Things are snappy.

So perhaps something else is affecting your system?

I almost went on the floor when I saw those numbers.   ;)

Once MC gets the files into the database, it's pretty snappy...even at 229,322 files. There's a couple slow areas which could be made better but I know these guys are busy with other stuff right now.

ive been watching the mem usage over the last few days. last night i even wipes out my hdd (not for mc, other reasons) and when i reinstalled it - its right back up there. it never used to be anywhere this high (20 - 40mb usually) but now its usually between 60 and 130mb. and thats without running any analysis or plugins.

could it just be due to the larger size of my database (20k files). if so im surprised as this occurs even when im not actively sorting through the files.

I have the same problem of MC gobbling up memory. When I import files that is ok, but its when I clean my file names that its slows everything else down.  I am not playing any music when I import/clean files.  It has caused other programs that are open to crash.  This hasn't always been a problem with MC, but only with the more later v. 9 releases.  No other software is causing my system to react like this only MC.

Anybody help?
