Playlists among albums
« on: August 26, 2004, 08:23:14 am »

Please tell me if this is possible in MC 10 or even 11. Let's say I have an artist and I have one full CD of their greatest hits. Before that they had 2 CD's. Now with RealPlayer's store offering 49 cent songs I decide to create those 2 CD's with the missing songs. I create MP3's from them and import into MC. Now under that artist I have 3 albums, however the 2 new ones are incomplete because some of those songs were on the greatest hits album.

The only solution I can think of besides copying those songs to make multiple MP3's is to create a playlist for each album. So I create a Playlist Group called Albums and then under that create another Playlist Group with the name of the artist. Under that I create Playlists for each album. Beautiful, works great, and no duplicate files.

However, the problem with this is two-fold. I have over 12,000 songs and it's growing. That means the Audio scheme under Media Library has to be expanded to find the artist and songs I want to create the playlists from, and the Playlists are expanded at the bottom of the tree. So when creating the playlist, I have to look at the playlist to see what is in there now, go back up to the Audio to see the songs for the artist and send any missing songs to that playlist. Thank goodness the right-click on a song remembers the last command so I can send to the playlist easier. But it's a back and forth among the big expanded trees to create all the playlists. And then when I want to play something, I have to do the same thing depending if I want to play the whole album or just some songs from the artist. Back and forth.

What I would like to see is under the Audio section up top, the ability to right-click on an artist and select "Add Playlist". Then the Playlist appears under that artist along with the albums currently there. That leaves one place to go for either playlists for the artist or the album. If there isn't this ability now, can it be added in the future?
Thanks,
Jeff

How about this?  Select artist, right click, send to, playlist.  Does that help?

I think you could just write the artist name in the Search field and use "Build Playlist" in the Action window (lower left corner).

Edit
Jim beat me by just one second.  :)
But as usual , there are many ways to do things with MC.

Yes, both those suggestions will help in creating the 3 album playlists in this example. I would just have to do it 3 times to create the 3 album playlists and then weed out the songs from the particular playlists that don't belong there.

But that doesn't solve the problem of deciding what to play. Let's say I wanted to play the whole album, I'd have to go to Playlists to see if there is one. Nope, let's go back to the Audio section. Still would be nice to have the playlists for that artist listed along with the albums in the Audio section.

How about just making those duplicate MP3s. They are not so big.

Though, I have previously asked for link files. They would represent a copy of the music file in the MC library, hold the tag information and contain a link to the main audio file. The link (filename path) should be editable.

This way also the tags could be different when the same music file (audio data) is used in several albums.

That is already working to some extent with APL files.

Now there is new support for cue files in MC 11. I would love to see a mechanism making APL style link files from cue sheets. (Just like Monkey's Audio MakeAPL tool does, but not only for APE files and with editable link path.)

Those link files could solve some forthcoming cue files related problems, I think. I just installed my first copy of MC 11 and started experimenting with the cue file support.

How about just making those duplicate MP3s. They are not so big.

My Smartlist 'Task -- Possible duplicates' shows me '8896 files (43.8 GB - 24.8 days)'. And I'm taking care of my dupes (ripping only full albums).

So this is definitely not the way to go.

I agree, duplicate files is not the way to go. That's what I'm trying to get rid of. Yeah, hard drives are getting cheaper and I'd love to have at least a 200GB drive so I wouldn't have to worry about it, but I don't have that luxury.
