Visualizations slow down
« on: January 27, 2004, 05:38:02 pm »

Is it me or are the visualizations getting slower with each build? At one time I was seeing 80 fps, now I'm getting around 35 fps. It seems OK when I first launch MC, but if I play a couple of tracks, it will progressively get slower. This didn't happen with the first couple of builds of MC 10 as I got a nice and smooth 70 to 80 FPS.

Quote
5. Changed: Playback time no longer shows negative numbers when switching tracks.

Personally, I liked it the other way better as it was a reassurance that the next track was coming instead of seeing ".../6:05" or whatever the track length is as it's queuing up the next track.

I entirely agree with both of these points.

It's possible we have a memory leak.  We'll check that, but can you report whether you use any third party plug-ins?

Or if it happens with certain visualizations?

How about with just one visualization?

The slowness happens w/ all my visualizations which did not happen a few builds back. I do use 3rd party plugins, but not for visualizations. The only way I could get the visualization to appear normal is to put it on low quality and decrease the visible size so much that it defeats the point of watching it. I used to enjoy highest/fastest quality. BTW, how do you see the FPS?

Can you try disabling the 3rd party plug-ins?

Disable anything else that is using CPU cycles or exercising the video card.

How do you see the FPS?
It's one of the settings if you right click to configure the display.

JimH,

The only 3rd party plugin I use is the "Playing Now" plugin. It happens on all visualizations, and I will try disabling the plugin tonight when I get home and give you the report.

Try this:

1) right click on the visualization and open the Visualization Studio
2) go to Tools/Options in the vis studio
3) change the target frame rate to something higher (the default is 33fps)
4) see if things speed up

gpvillamil, I already have it set to the max (85 fps). Thanks for the help.

JimH,

I disabled the "Playing Now" plugin and it didn't help. I haven't changed video device drivers or resolution or any kind of display settings.

I noticed this too.  What happens for me is that it stutters (i.e. freezes on screen) for a second or so every so often (maybe every minute) and then carries on.

I'm using a Radeon 9600 Pro

same thing here...thought it was me.  I have a GeForce4, 1.5gb ram and a 2.2Ghz P4...so I don't think it is my sustem.  I can play games with all of the settings maxed out, so I'd hope it could handle some simple vizualizations. :)

I too tried disabling the plugins...same story.

Same here. Less than every minute...more like every few seconds

Can you all list the third party plugins you are using?

I'm not trying to blame this problem on them, but I want to try to see what the pattern is.  We've seen problems before.

Vis becomes very slow (5 Frames /sec) when the menue bar and the mouse arrow disappear after moving on the vis screen. This is not the same situation, but maybe it helps.

No Plugins

That rings a bell.  I remember a similar problem from a few months ago.  I _think_ the solution was a change to the mouse driver or configuration.  I don't remember exactly.  A search might find it.

No, only in 2D.
3D is not running on my system.

No plug ins on my HTPC.  New MS Scroll wheel cordless optical mouse with latest drivers.  However, the mouse is normally tucked away and not used.  I don't use 3D vis as they run too slowly on the Plasma.  Just normal visualisations.  I get about 33 FPS and never managed to get any better than that.  (1GB RAM, XP2200+ Radeon 9600 Pro)

JimH,

No, this happens on every visulization. I, too, have the "stuttering" but only when going from one track to the next. I'm also noticing that the visulizations are slower when in full screen mode.

Just a standard PS/2 two-button mouse with a scroll wheel using native Windows XP drivers.

Me too. Cover Art Finder is only plugin. (I notice the slowdown and the stutter when it is *not* running)
