QNAP Intel® Celeron® 2.0GHz quad-core processor
« on: September 09, 2015, 04:31:29 pm »

Does anyone know if MC will run on the Celeron based QNAP NAS array?

We've got it running on a QNAP server.  It's a Linux version.  Maybe Bob can post the model.  This should be available from QNAP soon.

Ooooh, MC for Linux running on QTS? Now that's VERY interesting... might have to save up for one. :D

The qpkg isn't generally available yet but it's built on a TS-251

Will this be included in MC 21 or is it a separate purchase?

Thanks.

I am excited about this too!
The qnap runs Kodi, but it is so limited. Media Center on the QNAP that holds the media files would be really nice.

Sign me up! :)

QNAP TS 851, TS 451, TS 251, TS 869 Pro, I have one of each... I would be more than happy to help test.

Thanks

PLEASE, Synology too. I am waiting for this for severyl years now and could finally eliminate my extra server if the media server could run on Synology. I do not want to start a  discussion war on QNAP over Synology, but I know both and I use Synology for a reason. Please... please... please...

Howdy Rubberduck0
You can't dangle that in front of us without a clarification. I am not into wars either, and don't really care as I have no plans on changing, but what "reason" do you choose one over the other? I think we are all mostly geeks here and would enjoy your opinion.
It is hard for someone to get their first NAS as there is so much misinformation on what you can do with one over the other.
Most folks have no idea that some of these beasts have the power to play media...without any other hardware. I sure wish I had someone help me along.  Would have saved a bundle of cash. :)

Sorry if off topic.. I just realized this isn't MC Linux talk. But sort of....

Thanks

I am very encouraged by this.  I have a TS-419P+ and would be happy to test.  Having install via QPKG would be great...my Linux skillz are not at all mad.

Synology would be nice, too (have a DS1513+ if you want me to test).

Count me in. I was planning on buying a nas this week, but this changes everything. Does soon mean 1 month or 6 months. I would need to by another license too.  Also, would the QNAP run a full version of MC?

I'm assuming it'd be running the full Media Center 21 for Linux build.

Will it output audio via USB (for example to a USB dac) or do you need a network device to play the audio?

Yes. I used a DragonFly USB dac for testing.

Interesting.  Does the Dragonfly need drivers to make it work?  My Benchmark DAC2 needs Windows drivers installed so I may have to explore with Benchmark whether it would work just plugged into the Qnap.

Edit:  Just checked, my DAC2 has a driverless asynchronous USB 1.1 mode but it is limited to 96K audio, so this likely will not work for me but looks like it could be a great solution for those who don't do higher than 96K (or DSD I guess).

The good news is that many devices that require drivers on windows work without separate drivers on linux systems (the drivers are built into the kernel and/or ALSA).  However, the bad news is that if your device doesn't "just work" most vendors don't bother making drivers for linux systems so that may be the end of the road.

It will really depend on what kind of kernel the QNAP is running, what the ALSA support looks like, and whether your device has good linux support.  The DAC 2 claims to be UAC2 compliant, which means it would likely to work without a driver on a normal desktop Linux system.  Depending on the QNAP's environment it may "just work"

+1 for Synology support, either through a standard Synology package or docker.

For better or worse, using docker will restrict the user base to those with mid- to high-end Synology units (https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/app_packages/Docker).  However, that also ensures that the system should have sufficient resources to run headless MC.

I just talked to someone that visited the JRiver room at RMAF. He is going with a similar system to what was setup in the room, but already has a QNAP TVS-871 running Kodi. He can still return it. Will the JRiver support be an upgrade for him with his existing hardware or will he need to return it and purchase the new hardware with JRiver installed?

He plans to have the QNAP be used for all Blu-ray playback.

Don't hold me to this but I think the current plan is to just let a normal MC linux license to be used with it.

Are you simply running a virtual OS:
https://www.qnap.com/event/station/au/virtualization.php
and loading a MC Linux on top? From my reading Qnap are leading the NAS market in this area of technology. If it is a virtual machine/OS then wouldn't it make sense to work with an increased amount of onboard RAM?

Or is this something that's embedded and more in depth?

The model we built on is running linux, a version of ubuntu, and it has chrooted environments for apps to run in (Hybrid Deskstation).
So for example it will run a native version of firefox. The apps need to be repackaged since they don't use dpkg in the chrooted environment.
It also has an odd feature that every apps window can only appears in fullscreen mode, including dialog boxes.

Just to clarify this - will jriver work through the qnap web interface or will it require use of the hybrid deskstation feature (ie nas attached to monitor and keyboard)? I thought it was the latter, but I'm happy to be corrected.

That would be awesome - implying that the app adheres to their standards. Also makes the app easier to install since it will probably be done through the QNAP App Center and not some OS level kluged install.

That is amazing to hear and so many Qnap users are eagerly awaiting this!
So will this be available with the next firmware update of QTS or as an individual app to install in the Qnap appstore?
Timeline is about 1-2 weeks, Right?

That is my understanding.   It should be any day now.  It will be a 30 day trial version and will work with the same license as our regular Linux version.

Will the notice be posted here? Or do I need to monitor some page at qnap?

Thanks!
