JRiver very sluggish [Probable Drive Problem]
« on: September 29, 2015, 06:57:05 pm »

Recently we have to wait almost a minute for JRiver to start and sometimes things are really jumpy.
We get the blue circle every time we switch from one movie to another.
Could this be a PC problem?

I certainly hope you have more that 2 MB of RAM :)

Probably meant 2GB. That should still be lots but 4GB would be my minimum these days.

Well there could be many many reasons for a PC to get sluggish. If you are running 32 bit Windows, you could add another 2GB of memory and it would use it.

Your motherboard could take another 2GB of DDR3. But what you should do is buy 4GB of new memory that matches your PCs requirements, rather than adding another 2GB, because often if you add memory of a different brand or vintage it won't work well with the original memory.

So is this the only PC you run MC on? I thought you had a better PC.

Another useful tool is the Windows Resource Monitor. You can open the Resource Monitor by hitting "Ctrl+Alt+Del" keys then selecting Task Manager then clicking on Performance tab. At the bottom of the page is Resource Monitor (or just view the Performance window). Keep this window open while working with MC and see if any of the resources (CPU, Memory, Disk) go to 100% to determine where the problem may be. For example if "Disk activity" goes to 100% and MC gets sluggish you will know there is a problem with hard drive. This tool helped me figure out that I had a bad SSD drive.

Are those 5 drives on the network, on USB, or internal to your HTPC?

What happened to your other MC PC?

You know, the one with an i7-4790 processor, 16GB of memory, Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600, running Windows 7 64bit off a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500G, plus a couple of disk drives?

Is one of them a MC Server, and the other a MC Client? If so, which is which?

The answers make a difference to the approach you may take to improve performance.

That one is my office computer not the HTPC.

I have ordered some more memory and a SSD hybrid drive for the HTPC hoping that will fix the problems.

I have moved data from a drive that I think may be failing as we are getting a fair bit of whirring going on.

Done some checking in task manager on machine start up and we have system idle process at 90%

If you are getting or suspect some issues with drives, I highly recommend installing HD Sentinel.

It is a great bit of software, and can give some peace of mind about the condition of drives, and warn you when they are about to fail. I use it on both my office workstation and the HTPC, which also has five internal hard drives. Brilliant. Worth buying.

Ah. I asked about drives because poor disk access will do that to MC. I think your suspect hard drive might turn out to be the culprit.

Installed HD Sentinel. great software. Also tried to install 2 x 4gb memory but the HTPC refused to work so put in 2 x 2gb.
This machine is weird and we have are having issues.
Now I have some shows most are 25p one is 23.98 none will play without display switching which then causes lip sync problems.
Other 25p shows are not a problem
Can you look at the log and see if you can help to fix this issue.

The reason I linked to the specifications for your motherboard was that it has quite limited memory options. Then we got side tracked so I didn't describe the issue.

Your HTPC can only take up to 4GB of DDR3 memory. It can take up to 8GB of DDR2 memory, but that is slower memory. Plus of course, you need a 64bit version of Windows to use more than 3.5GB of memory anyway. You haven't said what version of Windows you are running on this HTPC.
