Resample question?
« on: October 24, 2015, 08:09:42 am »

Hi everyone,

Sorry if I posted it in the wrong board.

My system doesn't support 88,2 khz sample rate. So if I purchased an album in 24/88.2 would it be better to downsample to 44.1 or upsample to 96? Or something else? Or no difference?

Thanks

Upsampling to 96 would be a little better.

Is there a simple rule of thumb when it comes to resampling? Is it better to always pick higher sample rate? If the sample rate is 176,4 then what is better - up to 192 or down to 44.1?

In general you should never down sample unless needed, as up sampling is just padding out with zeros and the signal doesn't change, so it's the safe route

Thats not how resampling works, you are thinking of the bitdepth.

Does the part in bold text still stand?

Hendrik was right, I was mixing bit rate and sample rate, hadn't had my coffee yet

For sample rates, the general rule used to be up sample evenly (I.e. 48-96, 44-88) but with the quality of filters these days I'm not sure it's a real issue anymore, with a high end converter like MC uses it's likely not audible

the majority of DAC's up sample (over sample) anyways, you should send everything at the "native" DAC rate.  I have a DAC for example that is native 24/96 so I get MC to send everything at 24/96 no matter what
