Got a New Hard Drive
« on: December 11, 2015, 06:21:50 pm »

I bit the bullet and ordered an 8TB internal hard drive:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XS423SC

I'm in the process of loading it up now.  I suppose it's good that it means I'll have a backup copy of everything I can put in my safe from the old hard drive.

But the real reason I needed it is because some yahoo bought the Star Wars anthology on blu-ray and ripping all of them (with Media Center!) resulted in a lot of space!

Hopefully the 8TB mark will keep me happy for a while.  It's just amazing how the capacities just keep doubling and doubling.  I wonder what the limit will be?

;D  No way.  Once you start ripping BD the space goes very quickly!  I've now got a couple of the 8TB in my main pool and as I run out of space I remove the smallest drive and replace with the biggest one available.  As you can see in the Pic I've got a 40TB pool with "only" 3.5TB left on my "M:" drive

Let us know how the Seagate works out - reliability and noise are of interest to me.

I'm still filling it up.  It's going to take over 24 hours.  And this is with SATA connections.

Crazy.

It has taken me a lot longer to fill a 3TB drive.   ;D

I note that an 8TB USB drive is available for the same price from Amazon.

I finally finished filling it up.

I was relieved because even my junction points on the old drive moved over just fine (I have a pile of directories on A:\ which map into my old / new drive).

I can't really comment on the noise because I have such an insulated case.  It's pretty quiet, but obviously not SSD quite!

It's worth keeping in mind these use SMR so they are best for storing content that does not change (eg good for media)

Seagate is known for noisy drives.

my third and forth hard drive, back in the early 80's was a Seagate (65 meg, 5 1\4 inch) drive.

I don't think noisy drives are much of a problem any more.  They're all pretty quiet.

Some of you may find this report interesting.  BackBlaze is a cloud backup provider.  They publish the results of their hard drive failures a couple of times per year.  This report contains statistics for over 40,000 drives that are in current use in their data center.  Pretty cool real world stuff here.

Should note that while their stuff is "real world", its not anywhere close to "home usage". Drives react differently to being in a crowded metal cage with 20 other drives running 24/7 (vibrations, etc), than running at home for a bit.
