as per subject, as soon as i turn my fanless PC on JRiver start as a media server (I set this behaviour from the JRiver options)
media library is on a remote unit mapped to z:/<myLibraryPath>. I can access this path with no problem
Unfortunately JRiver notify me that it cannot access the library (mapped on this z: unit): as soon as I push 'Retry' it connects. This is odd since I have to conenct to the PC (e.g. via VNC) befor JRiver is usable (with JRemote)
ANy idea to overcome this issue? may be delaying the JRiver startup from Windows task manager?

the machine in your network running as media server should have local access to the principal library. For best results it should be on the system drive. The media files themselves can be anywhere.

So either your fanless PC is the "server" or it is a client. If it is a remote client then the other machine should be the one to run media server at startup. If you want it to be the server machine, install the library on its ssd (you could backup the file from machine 2 and restore it to the fanless one). If you do the latter it has to be on or allow wake-on-lan to get it running. JRemote can do the waking up directly btw.

If the "other" machine is a NAS, generally this won't work -- although recently JRiver can be run on some QNAP NASes (have to search on the forum for this).

JRemote would work in both cases. I found it easier though to use the PC I want to control via JRemote to run the server program and have the main library in that one running locally. Most admin can be done from the client, and the few things you can't do you can use Teamviewer or VNC occasionally.

I guess that Arindelle misunderstood your question.

The problem is due to a delay in Windows mapping the UNC pathname of you file server to the Z: shortcut.

You could try running the Windows command "explorer.exe Z:" before starting MC. It should force the mapping before MC gets to look for that drive. You could put the two commands "explorer.exe Z:" and "MC.exe" in a Windows batch file to make it easier.

Another option is to remove Z: from MC's library search path, and add the UNC pathname of your file server to MC's library search path instead. That way you don't have to worry about the shortcut mapping at all.

Andrew answer better fits with my issue
My server run on a fanless PCn with a small (200GB) SSD HDD: my library resides on a Qnap TS219P with 4+4 Tbytes HDDs in RAID1 configuration. I mapped the Z: drive on \\myNas in order to enjoy the reconnect-at-logon feature (using the UNC name I am asked for username and password at startup so it does not work)
Unfortunately my NAS is not able to host the JRiver server as more recent units do.
I will try the suggestions by adding a batch file doing 'dir z: \')  in the startup directory

Yes your "dir z:/" idea could be better than my "explorer.exe z:" idea because the batch file window closes when the batch completes, whereas in my case the explorer window remains open. But if "dir" does not fix it, then do at least try "explorer" too..

And furthermore..

In its normal setup, Windows does "lazy" connections to remote network shares. The purpose is to achieve faster boot up times for Windows without waiting for all shares to connect. However there is certainly a Windows registry setting that you can change that forces Windows to do faster connections to remote shares.

Only problem is that I cannot remember the respective Windows registry path, entry name or value to set (sorry for that) but perhaps somebody else on this forum can remember it?
