Theater View Freezing
« on: February 03, 2016, 09:46:42 pm »

I don't know what happened but I can't use Theater View now.
It freezes as soon as I start scrolling.

If you run NVIDIA, can you test if it improves if you temporarily disable Online Media Slideshow?
(Options -> Theater View -> Theme -> Online media slideshow -> "Show online media slideshow in file views")

Still trying to figure out which interaction specifically causes this, this is my latest hunch to go after.

The online slideshow was already disabled.

I removed your link.  I didn't recognize the site.

Latest driver is not necessarily the best driver.

I had to roll back to driver version 347.88 to make Theater View stable on my HTPC.

I haven’t used that feature for a long time. Disabling it on my other rig with the latest Nvidia drivers and the latest MC version made no difference.

I’m glad to hear that you’re working on this.

So much for that idea, I suppose. :(
Unfortunately it happens extremely rarely only for me, and only on my HTPC, not on the development PC, so its not easy to debug or test anything.

I still had the video from last night so I uploaded it again.
It happens nearly instantly when scrolling for me.

Maybe make a view that lists all the tracks in your library at once and just start scrolling?

Latest driver is not necessarily the best driver.
It is if you play games.

I found another clue that might be related, lets see if 21.0.46 brings any improvement once its available. No promises though, for all I know this is 5 different problems.

If this is the same as the problems previously reported, it is the new drivers that cause the problems.  Older drivers work.
Please read these posts on Nvidia.

I can get out of Theater View by hitting Esc a few times without it freezing all of JRiver but it freezes as soon as I start to scroll if I open up theater view again.

Not a viable solution. There's no VP9 decoding on the old drivers, and no optimizations for new games.
Unless there are thousands of complaints, NVIDIA don't pay much attention to issues reported by users. The volume of complaints about this would be far too small.
They do pay attention to bugs reported by developers though.

I'm on Windows 8.1 and using the 361.91 drivers already. Didn't fix it.
The problem is immediately reproducible if I load up a big list and just hold the down arrow to scroll through it. Freezes after a second or two, if it doesn't freeze immediately.

So you load up a big list (1000+ items?) go into playing now, and hold down the down arrow? I have similar freeze-up problems, and a consistent way to redproduce it is helpful.

Using a list of 7200 audio files in both Standard View and Theater View, I can't reproduce this.

Neither can I reliably. Mine freezes once every 3 days on the HTPC, and never on the development system, so thats no help.

The only thing I can say is that it has to be listing files, not albums.
It doesn't have to be a list with thousands of tracks, that should just make it easier to test.
The video I uploaded showed it freezing after 5 tracks out of a 12 track album view.

It doesn't seem to be related to settings either.
I set up a fresh library on a new user account and it still freezes in the default jriver configuration.

With 450 videos, I can't reproduce it in either Theater View or Standard View.

I tried quite a few times on my computer, it happens some times, but i can't seem to consistently reproduce though.

A few observations:

- It seem to only happen in views that have text and a thumnail on the right side. For instance "name"-view for movies, nor series view for television, but "recent" in television show the problem (take it with a grain of salt, as it is difficult to reproduce)
- It seemingly does not happen again if the view freezes and i jump out of theatre view (i have to press F4 and then esc twice apparantly), the view that froze then works again all times i retry.
- It seems to happen within a few seconds of scrolling, if it doesn't happen then i can scroll "forever" without problems.

This is the opposite of my experience.
If it freezes and I bring up theater view again it freezes almost immediately (<10 items) if I open it up again without reloading jriver.
All views listing files freeze up within 20-30 items normally, there is no time for me where it sometimes works.

Just so you know what to expect, it's very likely that this is a video driver problem.

Instead of the up and down arrows, try channel up and down on a remote, or page up and down on a keyboard.  Or type letters on a keyboard.

I don't even have to scroll. Just moving the mouse quickly over the list of the items is enough.

Most certainly it's probably Nivida driver issue. Just want to help narrow it down.

Turns out its much easier to reproduce if you have a low refresh rate.  On 24Hz, it happens quite a lot more often than on 60Hz on my HTPC.

So since I could reproduce it more easily, there is another potential workaround coming in the next build which seems to help on my HTPC.
Please let us know if its still happening for you, or if any new problems show up due to the change.

I was getting this issue too but I don't get it anymore. Don't know what fixed it other than maybe an Nvidia driver change.

Windows 10 pro 64bit
Nvidia GTX760 - 361.91
MC21.0.50
50Hz
HID remote using Logitech Harmony

(was also happening using keyboard)

PS. The other day I was intentionally trying to break it because I had read the thread about upgrading Nvidia driver and it seemed to do the job and fix it for me.

It seems like 21.0.54 stopped it freezing.
I noticed that it seems to pause for a brief moment or drop frames and stutter when scrolling lists now though - that is probably where it would freeze without recovering before.

That happens when the device gets lost and has to be recovered, I'm not sure why it happens, but at least that process works now.
For me it usually happens once after coming out of standby, and then its all good.
