JRiver 21 Mac No updates in 2016??
« on: February 06, 2016, 08:36:29 am »

My post a few weeks ago was never answered about the latest version crashing on DSD playback JRiver Mac And my post last night about why JRiver Mac has zero updates in 2016 while the Windows version has 14 updates since Jan 2016. Does JRiver still support the Mac version and if so then why haven't we seen as many updates as the windows version? And can you at least explain to all Mac users about when we can see the next update ?

Please advise. Thank you. Steven

Please use an older version if the current one isn't working for you.

Yes. Fair enough. But why does the Windows version have 14 updates in 2016 so far and the Mac version has zero updates ?

Windows is the primary platform for developing MC - the majority of the developers use and develop on it. That said, even though there's been a lack of updates I'm sure development on the Mac side hasn't ceased in the slightest. I'm also sure John has been working his magic behind the scenes. ;)

My advice would be to exercise patience until the next build is released. That's all we can really do.

Thank you for the reply. Fair enough. But it really would be nice if there were more developers that would primarily focus on the Mac since the price is exactly the same for JRiver Mac as Windows users. I mean 14 updates for the PC since 1/1/2016 and zero for Mac is a complete disregard. There has to be many thousands of Mac users besides myself that would greatly appreciate the same attention.

99% of the changes on the Windows version will also apply to the Mac version, so even if you get fewer builds you don't get fewer improvements or changes (maybe just slightly delayed).

The only way we ever could release MC for three platforms is by using the exact same application everywhere, so unless something is very platform specific, it will just apply to all of them.

Not sure about thousands of users but I can confirm there is at least one besides you that would appreciate this. Don't think it will happen though, JRiver developers are not Mac users so the Mac product will probably always be low priority in the JRiver portfolio. Too bad, I know many Mac users that would be interested but I don't recommend it because of the limited commitment to the product. Just my opinion.

I've heard JRiver employees make this statement several times but many of the v21 changes/enhancements to the Windows version are for features that are not currently available in the Mac version such as TV, Theater View, etc, etc. Just a quick look at the latest Windows release seems to confirm this. Am I missing something?

Yes, those features aren't available in the Mac and Linux builds... yet. But they're working on it - over the last year or so they've added video and image support. It's only a matter of time before there's more-or-less parity with the Windows builds feature wise.

It takes time, they have to code everything from scratch for Mac/Linux whereas with Windows there's DirectX, Directshow, etc. which helps with supporting some of the stuff.

Fair enough...but as a JRiver Mac user for the last 3 versions, the number of Mac specific releases and bug fixes has slowed way down. The numbers don't lie as the OP stated so I think it's also fair for users to interpret that as a lack of commitment.

I spent my money for version 20 and then I spent my money again to update to version 21, what is the result? there are always the same bugs and the same horrible user interface. That's not acceptable at all! JRiver team you should offer a different service to your customers that prefer your product instead of others and that, above all, pay for a license instead of use free software.

I'm using a MacBook Pro Early 2011

Which bugs, exactly?

The interface can be changed by using a custom skin. I'm using a ModernCards fork I'm maintaining at the moment; Light: http://i.imgur.com/7vU9JET.png and Dark: http://i.imgur.com/C7G4e0J.png - I suppose I should release these skins at some point.

However this won't change the menus to be more "Mac-like". This is because Media Center uses it own system to draw windows, menus, etc. and not Apple's.

to put your minds at ease a little bit .. almost all 2016 updates have to do with TV or tuners or TV guides ... no UI improvements for Windows; no substantive changes ... some added expressions ... but its very TV Video centric for the moment. You'll probably get a an updating that will include a couple of new expressions and transaltion changes.

Wondering about when you guys get Theater Mode is something else, but it doesn't have much to do with the 2016 "updates". I haven't had much to test as I'm not into TV outside of webstreaming it .. I don't even have a tuner. They mess with things in Windows, when they get it right, then they port ot over like Awesome said I pretty sure.
