I tried to close a new Vera Crypt (Branch of True Crypt) that creates a single large volume to house many files and encrypts it. When I mount the volume, it shows as drive Z.

However, if MC is open, and I try to dismount the volume, it says there ae files in use.  Looking in Process Explorer, I can see that it is indeed MC that 's latched onto Z: and just sitting idle.

Any idea why this is? I don't have any auto-imports referencing that drive.

I have a feeling (and it is just a feeling) that MC seems to hold some files open for a period of time before releasing them.
What I sometimes experience is when I've checked the tagging of some newly ripped CDs and then move the folder into my media folder ready to import into MC 'thumbs.db' can be locked by something I can't delete the folder from my 'working' area.

After a minute or two the 'lock' is released and the thumbs.db can be deleted.

I only ever see this on thumbs.db and when I'm moving files into my MC media folder but can't say what's causing it. . .

Hey Spike.   I guess it's somewhat similar although in my case nothing was copied from the Z drive TO the folders monitored by JRiver.  The reason being is that it's an encrypted storage unit.

It's as if JRiver open a folder view of Z:\ (which is the mount position)

I have no idea how to resolve this

I use TrueCrypt.
I'm not sure what your setup is but you could try this in Vera Crypt:
- add your encrypted drive to favorites so you are prompted for the password when your PC starts.
- Leave it mounted. When your shut down your PC it will automatically dismount.

Unless dong a backup, I very rarely mount or dismount from TrueCrypt. (other than the automatic prompt on PC start-up)

Actually, the primary reason for this volume is not for the encryption, it's so that I can have a password protected volume that is easily mounted and backed up as a single huge file of 100 GB.
I put all my family photos, movies and non-secretive documents in there.  Makes backups easy. It also prevents anyone from deleting them.

I only open this volume every few days, not on system startup.

Whenever I do, JRiver grabs a hold of the root and won't let go.  The reason is above, I can be in control of when/how it gets modified.

Not super useful for you, but MC isn't holding on to any of my encrypted drives.
The only time I can't dismount is if MC is actually playing a song or video.
Dismounts work fine on 4 different PC's.

I have two different encrypted volumes which I occasionally use with MC, and this isn't happening with mine either.

Do you maybe have the drive set up in MC as a Handheld?  Do you have any of the Options > File Location settings set to point at the drive?

Thanks guys.  I just did an open and close of my Veracrypt volume and the problem didn't happen again.

The only thing I can think of that I did last time was that I saved a backup of the MC Database.

I'll test it out in a day or two.

Side Note: Sysinternals Process Monitor and Process Explorer are pretty cool tools
