Is anybody running MC on Audiophile(AP)-Linux V3?
« on: March 13, 2016, 09:16:37 pm »

Hi, I recently learned about AP-Linux V3 and went ahead and installed it.  I was wondering if anybody is running MC with AP-Linux?  If so, could you post instructions on how to do this?   Thank you.

Sounds like another example of audiophile snake oil to me. You already get bit-perfect audio when using MC, IMO.

At least with this deal, it's not true snake oil because the user isn't being hit up for $s (unless I missed the "pay here" button over at the AP website).

Based on similar concepts from the Windows OS world, I'd echo Awesome D's thoughts and caution that I'd expect that you'll struggle to engender official support for this approach. I'm quite happy with and prefer a minimalist approach, so I don't foresee adding another layer to the signal path.

All the best though. Don't forget that AP has a forum. You could try for advice there.

EDIT:
I'd also note that MC's preferred platform is Debian with AP's as Arch. You might (even if unlikely) strike some unexpected conflicts anyway.

MC does run fine on Arch, but AP-linux is not "official" Arch, it's a derivative with some significant changes, and some other folks had difficulty getting things working correctly on AP-linux. JRiver is in the Arch User Repository with all deps listed, and the AUR PKGBUILD works a treat for Arch.  That said, I wouldn't advise trying out an Arch-based system as your first linux experience unless you 1) really enjoy puzzles or 2) have a computer science background.

Many of the changes in AP-Linux are a bit questionable, not just from a "this might not make a difference" standpoint, but rather from a "this actually hurts system stability and performance" standpoint.  Try Debian: it's easy, stable, and officially supported here.

Thanks for the responses, all.

I started as a Windows MC customer years ago and recently purchased the MC upgrade license cause I definitely love the sound quality of MC Linux (being new to Linux I started with Mint Cinnamon).  Then for a bit smaller footprint, I recently installed Xubuntu (also sounds lovely).  Saw mention somewhere about AP-Linux and decided to give that a try.  However, if it can't run MC, I'm not interested.  I don't think I'll pursue Arch. I'll stick with my Ubuntu based installations.

My focus is music sound quality and MC has the features that give me the sound I'm looking for via PCM to hi-rate DSD,
plus, impressive DSP like Parametric EQ & Effects (Recording Studio).  All done with sound quality that amazes me.  You guys rock.

I can attest to this, I'm running MC in Arch and it's working fine. :P

Otherwise you can't go wrong with a Ubuntu flavor. It's based off Debian and it functions more-or-less the same it does on Debian.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, even bought an SSD and put AP Linux on it. I'll stick to Ubuntu. MC21 sounds wonderful with my DAC, supports all it's capabilities  and I love it aside from a few growing pains. ;)
