I think the way the candidates stood on the Iraq War is incredibly important.

It was the biggest foreign policy blunder of my life.

Some of them supported it and some of them didn't.

The biggest single decision a president can make without any authorization is to start a war.  So it's really important to have one that thinks the right way.

Just my two cents.

Socialist is as bad as being the fuhrer and/or corrupt ? if a socialist got in, they'd still have congress to attend to. At least for the time served, a socialist will bring some needed reasoning to an otherwise corrupt, right political system.

Bernie is going to find it hard to win the democratic nomination.

...still it keeps the ROW (you know the other 96% of us) fascinated, it's like a long drawn out Soap Opera with mind blowing amounts spent on nominations... even before the election campaign starts!  Bernie V Trump would make for a good end of Season Eps (I think we are up to that in House of Cards  ;D)

Not wanting to be left out of the fun, the locally bookies are taking bets with the current odds being:
- Hillary Clinton 1.40
- Donald Trump 3.75
- Bernie Sanders 15.00
- Ted Cruz 26.00
- John Kasich 26.00
- Joe Biden 51.00
- Paul Ryan 81.00
- Mitt Romney 101.00
- Juaquin James Malphurs (Wacka Flocka Flame) 501.00
- Deez Nuts 501.00

PS - In Oz we are mortified that there is a potential for a Aust 12 week election campaign & I think we would revolt if there was a year of this stuff.

A lot of reporters overlook the fact that the super delegates can and do switch their allegiance.  It's the pledged delegates that matter most.

But I support Bernie because he is dead right about the system.  It is broken.  Congress can't even raise the minimum wage above $7.25 per hour.  Most people I ask don't know what the minimum wage is.

We have a blatantly corrupt government where money buys access and favors.  It is effectively bribery.

Almost nobody went to jail for the robbery that occurred in the financial meltdown.

Anyone seen "The Big Short"?  It's a great semi-documentary of the collapse of the housing finance industry, told from the point of view of those who made billions when it happened.

One of the things I really love about Jim is that he's pretty liberal.  As the owner of a successful company, he fits the Republican profile really well.  But low taxes for him hasn't corrupted his thinking.  Thanks Jim!

I honestly don't understand the wide support that Clinton has. To me, she is the epitome of corruption that we as a whole are getting sick of. I have severe ideological differences with Bernie, but at least he seems like a decent human being. I put my vote for Cruz as the lesser of many evils. I don't really like him but Rand Paul quit a little early. But hey, if any candidate wants to come out against the industry's tyrannical approach to DRM, they'll have my vote for sure.

I have deeply-held conservative principles and I believe socialism is wrong for this country. Cruz isn't great, but what other choice do I have? Trump? I actually briefly considered voting for Trump. He's a total disaster and a moron and nothing he wants to do will ever fly in this country, but part of me wanted to stick it to the Republican party that I'm so sick of. About 4 seconds later, however, I admitted that isn't a very responsible way to vote for a new prez   ;).

For those against a socialist democrat, could you please explain why it is bad?
Firefighters are paid for by the government as are Police, military, public schools, public library, voting, roads, healthcare these are ALL, or should be, socialist services. The logic to not wanting a socialist is to say privatization on everything is the way to go. That's just f**king bonkers. I'd suggest stop listening to corrupt governments, which they truly are, and their snide remarks against socialism. Do some research.

go ahead. like to understand the mind of those who think fairness, compassion and the common good is unreasonable, re: Bernie.
My theory is that people aren't used to that kind of outlook and attitude, immediately dismiss it as fake, or not achievable? There are many who'd disagree, who have vision see and that it is very possible. A guy like Bernie Sanders comes around not too often, don't want to pass that up.

Yup Sanders is your man, he's still a politician but at least he isn't completely sold on the idea of being one hundred percent in the pocket of the hideously corrupt, totally undemocratic and universally destructive transnational corporacy (sic). If we hope to survive as a species we need to evolve beyond the anachronistic economic system we are still dragging around like a ball and chain - an economics that thwarts progress and delimits potentially useful technological advances according to short term profit motives for the very few sociopathic parasites whom amazingly still have everyones balls in a vice. A good example: does anyone wonder why a new antibiotic hasn't been developed since the eighties (clue: it ain't because microbes cannot be developed to fight microbes - nature only needs a little enhancement from the labs).

Self management and mutual aid folks  ;).

Good luck to you all in the elections

True - to an extent.

I meant good luck in your decision making process - and luck may have something to do with it. Maybe your TV would pack up and you would be forced to think without the bombardment of paranoia inducing spin and flummery that all of our democratic processes have become. ;D. If we're trading platitudes - I always liked this old chestnut.

"Free your mind and your arse will follow"

another good one

"question everything"

Have fun - in Britain we made the wrong choice - twice in a row now and we've got a govt. set on handing over our very infrastructure to privateers with no national loyalties or concept of decency, humanity etc. whilst encouraging the banks to manipulate our economies at will a la the crash in order to soften us up for these 'inevitable' takeovers. Nothing is inevitable except death - I believe we can choose a philosophy of life before death rather than simply serving as an economic function of our masters obscene and useless wealth. The US has the opportunity to get brave again and reflect the efforts of the founding fathers - but it will require that bravery on a personal level from individual to individual and will not be resolved simply by an election result.

I believe anyone is capable of pretty much anything - if it matters enough.

So make your own good fortune with your choices - but first take the long view on what good fortune really is.  :)

I think the quote is very interesting in that it implies a couple of things:

1) you did get the government you deserve in the UK (or anywhere else) for the last 2 elections (and all those before it) even if you disagree with the outcome.
2) It of course does open the fascinating opportunity that the next and all future elections are open to the arguments that you express.

For me: Every nation gets the government it deserves = choose carefully as you own the outcome.  The world is watching....well not so much for the UK elections :) but don't take that badly, I'm from Oz so no one on the global stage cares what we do!

Having recently immigrated to Oz, it seems you can have a new gov't almost at a whim...

having moved here from Canada, most of the world don't realize how tied we (Canada) are to the outcome of the US elections.  I feel genuine relief that Oz feels quite removed from that, I almost don't care now who wins.  Almost.

Welcome to Oz!  Pending what State you are in, have you been "allocated" a "footy" team to follow?

For those that are (vaguely interested) our Head of State is Queen Elisabeth II represented by the Governor General who is actually appointed by the elected Government of the Day (ratified by the Queen which has never been withheld).  This is a figurehead role.  Our Prime Minister is not popularly elected but appointed by a vote of the ruling party's parliamentary members.  Embarrassing we now have a recent history where the ruling party of the day has rolled the Prime Minister for another Member of Parliament with monotonous regularity.  While it is not a change of Government, it is tiresome for the ruling party to change it's leader.... but at least we don't have an election for the role!

This political backstabbing reminds me of another saying "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer"

Thanks mate, I'm in WA.  My indoctrination begins tomorrow at my first ever Dockers match, I've acquired the regulation attire and the terms of my residency in this beautiful country have been clearly stated, I am now Fremantle for life it seems LOL

Canada's head of state is also QEII, and it's also figurehead, although we vote for a party as well our system allows for a popular vote in practice, and it's difficult to remove the PM once there.  I guess once my PR comes through I can't say 'our' anymore in relation to Canada ha ha

I don't think it really matters who wins.  Americans say they want a change and put that thought into the presidential election.  And then they re-elect the members of congress (96%) who are the core of the problem.   ::)    It's the system that is broken.  Bringing in an outsider to be President won't do diddly.

Love Ryan's "Now wait a minute, let's see where this textbook racism takes us" stance. Almost as much fun as Jeffery Lord's whole Trump was really just pointing out that Judge Curiel was a racist and not making any actual racist comments himself.
