MPG playback is slow
« on: June 20, 2003, 01:24:35 pm »

Big Bug.    (I placed this also in current bug report)

MC starts to crawl when working with mpg (video) files.
I click and wait, click and wait for every task.

My mp3 (audio files) work fine.

MC worked faster when my mpg files showed up under "audio" media type.   I'm slowly reimporting my large mpg collection to convert the media type from "audio" to "video" and have discovered this major flaw.
I've only converted 15 files and MC is choking with every key stroke.

It looks like it's updating constantly with every click.

I have "Update tags when file info changes" un-checked.
Maybe this isn't working for video media types.

I believe this is a high priority bug.   Don't you?

Cindy.

it may have something to do with

1. video files take more out of the computer.

2. depending on the video card it will shift work to the main CPU and not do the work in the video card like all good video cards should. normaly this happens on a computer that has video on the mother board.

so it was working fine before?

Yes....  It works great with version 9.0146.

Ever since that version it's been awful.     JRiver needs to test an mpg library on 9.0143 and then do the same task on any current versions and see the big performance difference.

It's not a video card problem because my videos play fine with other players  (ie. WMP, Zoom Player, even WinAmp3)  Also, in version 9.0.143 I can play my music video all day long without any problems with stability within MC.

It should stay in "Beta" until this major bug is resolved.

Just me?

Well.............  Isn't it the whole Idea why JRiver split Jukebox and Media Center?   I'm a DJ who uses both mp3 audio and mpg videos.    MC needs to be fix for other DJ's who may want to play both.

Are they forgetting that ever song now and days has a visual.  They should not just focus on mp3.

I am a bit concerned about the stabiity of MC.  v9.0 is not stable enough to really use, CD burning is flaky, can't rearrange tracks.  Little things here and there are not right.

So I wonder if 9.1 will be tweaked before they start 9.2.....

I agree.  I love the direction MC is going and I feel it's a great tool for Djs.   However, it's stability and bugs with video needs to be fix.   When a player starts to choke the minute you load mpg files, then something is very wrong. I also feel this should be high priority before going on to 9.2

My guess is it's one file (or codec) that isn't working well.

Any chance you can isolate a file and send it to us for testing? (matt @ jriver.com)

Thanks for any clues!

(p.s. 9.1 is in beta -- all reproducable bugs will be fixed before it's released)

Sure Matt.  I'll send you a file today.  Anything to get this bug fix.  I used TMPGEnc for mpg (Mpeg2) compression.

http://www.tmpgenc.com/

Matt,  I have a large video library so I would be glad to give you any help during your "beta" period.

I believe your correct in the codoc theory.  My mpg videos in version 9.0.143 show up as audio, and work fine as audio. It's the current versions which recognizes them correctly as video files that are slowing thing down to an unusable state.

I have played my mpg videos in WMP9 and they are recongized as video files in that program.

Thanks Matt!

Cindy,

I noticed you are using an Athlon.  Do you know if your motherboard uses a Via chipset?  I just fixed my similar slowdown errors by installing the newest Via 4-in-1 drivers (AKA "Hyperion" drivers).

Here's a link to the drivers: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

If you don't know if your mobo uses a Via chipset it's still safe to download and run the Hyperion drivers.  They will only install if it detects the Via chipset.

See this thread: http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=MediaCenter;action=display;num=1054601332;start=0#23

I'm having the same problem with version 9.0.180.  Afteer reading the posts, I suspect that it is perhaps a codec or Via chipset issue as suggested.  I can also play MPG files in all other players without issue.  I will try some of the suggestions and report back with my results.

I mispoke.  My .MPG files can only be played successfully by CyberLink PowerDVD.  Media Center, RealOne, Windows Media Player, DivX Player, Quicktime, etc. cannot.  What codec or other fix might I be able to install that will allow me to play the .MPG within the Media Center itself?
