I've been using network audio (DLNA), but I'm thinking of moving to a small PC in the listening room, connected by USB to my DAC instead.

To do that, I would want an Android tablet app that could control JRiver on the PC from my listening chair. I've tried a couple of the JRiver remote options (Gizmo and WebGizmo), but so far, I've been underwhelmed by them, compared to the JRiver GUI itself or even the better DLNA control points. The options for searching, display, managing playlists, and showing fields like "Composer" or fields I've added seem far less flexible than when using JRiver at the computer.

The ideal would be to replicate the JRiver GUI on the tablet. Is anything close to that available?

Some time ago, I had tried VNC (server running under Windows 7), and I remember to have installed a VNC client on my Android tablet.
The result was usable, but very unconfortable (very small screen, and not very convenient keyboard).

If you are considering buying a small PC, rather consider using a portable one :-).

Gizmo is probably the best option.  It might take a little time to adapt.

A headless NUC in your listening setup won't replace the PC you're using now (for other tasks), and the JRiver license will let you install a copy on both machines. Use Gizmo or JRemote on the Android tablet to control playback, and run MC as a client on your working PC to manage your library (rip discs, purchase downloads, tag music).

I'm trying Gizmo again, and I'm remembering why I found it so frustrating.

• After searching for an album, I can't find a way to display the tracks and add some of them to Playing Now.
• I can't find a way to select one or multiple items in the play queue (= Playing Now list) for (e.g.) removal.
• Can't find a way to reorder  or clear the play queue.

Am I missing the obvious here? If not, would JRemote be better in doing such things?

I *think* JRemote for Android does all of those things, but I don't own it, so I'm not 100% sure.

EOS remote definitely does everything you just asked for.  It has a demo version available so you can see what it does.  Both JRemote and EOS are said to be good products.

Thanks, Brian!  Can you provide a link?  The only EOS remote I found was for controlling Canon cameras.

How about the other basic features: ability to reorder the play queue, delete tracks, or clear the play queue?

JRemote for Android is quite good, but it has some bugs and is missing a few things the iOS version can do. I haven't tried eos but I do use JRemote to control playback most of the time.

Go to options media network and you can set up your own views as you can in the main MC gui, eg by composer etc . In fact whatever you need.

Thanks, Mike.  I've used the options to set up views for Gizmo, etc. I agree, they are helpful; but they don't seem as flexible as the main MC GUI, IMO. For example, there's no Panes View available -- or have I missed it?

I'm playing with eos right now. It seems to work pretty well (and to be modeled to some degree after the outstanding DLNA control point Bubble UPnP). One concern is that it's not been updated in about a year, which suggests to me that the developer has moved on. Maybe I'll give JRemote a try soon.

There is a Eos thread here but I agree I think hes done as much as he can or wants.

I never really use Panes in the main GUI so I don't miss them.

I tend to use the category views with album artwork
